The "Wall" in Philadelphia...Live in Peace, Rest in Peace

Check out these stuff animals images:

The "Wall" in Philadelphia...Live in Peace, Rest in Peace
stuff animals
To Michael "MIC" Ta'bon and his friend Lionel Dunbar, the names are a measure of the social health of the city, and painting them on a wall in the Nicetown section of North Philadelphia is a way to make sure they are not forgotten.

The men created a mural on Hunting Park Avenue near 19th Street known simply as "the Wall." It has no bold colors, no faces, no scenery - just the 406 names and ages of the homicide victims in Philadelphia last year.

"This," said Ta'bon, "is our memorial, just like the one in Washington, D.C."

Ta'bon, 32, who served time for armed robbery, said he was inspired to combat violence last year after he sang a solo at the funeral of a friend shot to death after a basketball game in North Philadelphia.

A singer and rapper, Ta'bon later wrote and recorded a hip-hop song called "Rest in Peace." In it, amid the crackle of gunshots, Ta'bon pleads, "Do you know who you took from the world, somebody's husband, wife, friend, son? . . . Please stop all the murders."

After penning the song, Ta'bon went to Dunbar, who operates the Time Out Car Wash in a parking lot at the site of the Wall.

"I said, Lionel, I need some help," Ta'bon said.

They got a friend, Tyrone Barge, who operates a construction company, to donate the scaffolding, and supply the paint and some of the painters. Above the names in large print are the words "Rest in Peace." Below that is: "This Mural Is Dedicated to the Families & Friends of 2006 Victims of Violence in the City of Brotherly Love."

"The Wall is the seed we're trying to plant to end the violence," Ta'bon said. "Now what we have to do is solve the problem."

Dunbar said the project cost about ,500, with much of it donated. "We all did some of the painting," he said, referring to several other friends.

"A lot of people think their [relatives] died in vain," said Dunbar. "This shows that someone cared enough to remember them."

Dunbar said he and Ta'bon gathered the names from The Inquirer and from the office of Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson.

Dunbar said the mural has attracted hundreds of people, especially relatives of the victims.

"People recognize the names and they come and tell stories about the people who died," Dunbar said. "You have 406 stories here. And I've heard over half of them."

The Wall was dedicated Jan. 1 and drew a crowd of about 300. On Valentine's Day, Ta'bon and Dunbar held another vigil, called a "Second Chance to Say Goodbye." At it, friends and relatives of the victims brought stuffed animals, which were posted on a utility pole that stands two stories tall.

"About 150 and counting," Dunbar said of the number of stuffed animals. "People bring them every day."

Dunbar said the names of two men who worked at his car wash, James "Boop" Johnson, 31, and Anthony Lawrence, 36, are on the list.

Ta'bon describes the violence in the city as "a war without a leader. It's every man for himself."

He has had his own experiences with crime and violence.

"I was the definition of a career criminal. This started when I was 12," Ta'bon said. "It's edifying to my spirit to be able to help people with their problems."

The Walter Collins Case
animal movie
When this photograph was originally published in 1928, everyone assumed that it showed the reunion of a mother with her son, who'd been abducted from his home four months previously. In fact, the boy in the picture knows full well that he isn't her son, and the woman is pretty sure that he isn't. Not that anyone's going to believe her when she says so.

"Changeling", directed by Clint Eastwood, tells the story of the woman's attempts to make people believe that that boy isn't who he says he is. I saw it at the cinema on Saturday, and enjoyed it much more than most of the critics seem to have done. I might have been particularly predisposed to like it because it's based on the sort of weird crime story that I always come across in the old 1930s newspapers that I go through when I'm looking for stories for the Unsung Joe.

Best not read any further if you want to go and see the film soon, mind. SPOILERS, as they say.

When I got home, I looked up some old news stories on the case (after first checking out the Wikipedia Wineville chicken coop murders article, of course), and found a good one from near the end of 1928, which was after most of the main developments in the case had unravelled, but before anyone had a clue what had really happened.

I've pasted the article below. If you've seen the film, it's interesting to note the different slants that the article and the film put on the same story -- for instance, for some reason, the article goes really big on the dog aspect, which is entirely missing from the film (much to the film's benefit!) and doesn't place nearly as much emphasis on the "murder farm" part of the story as the film does. But it's an interesting piece even if you haven't seen the film, especially if you bear in mind that there really was no reason why anyone should have been at all certain that the boy was this woman's son, and an enormous amount of evidence that proved that he obviously wasn't.

USED A DOG TO SOLVE THE 'MYSTERY BOY' ENIGMA
How 'Walter' Fooled the Psychologists, the Police, a Dog and Even His 'Mother' -- and Then Told!

WHAT has happened to Walter Collins, ten-year-old Los Angeles lad who was kidnapped five months ago? Is he dead, the victim of some fiend's fury, tortured, perhaps, in revenge for actual or fancied wrongs in the darksome shadows of Folsom Penitentiary? Or is he alive, mocking the efforts of experts to establish his identity, and secure behind the impenetrable mask of a talented child actor?

This strange enigma, which confronts Los Angeles authorities, constitutes one of the most involved and baffling juvenile cases on record. The drama is furnished by a child undeniably-keen and gifted, and the plot is being worked out against the colorful background furnished by a "murder farm" where at least four boys have met death, smoldering prison feuds, and the mysterious actions of a band of abductors.

Walter Collins, happy lad of ten Summers, disappeared something over five months ago. So far as his mother, Mrs. Christine Collins knew, he was playing near their Los Angeles home. As darkness settled and he did not return she became apprehensive. Then, after a few hours of tense waiting, she reported his disappearance to police.

A nationwide search was made, but there was no clue to Walter's whereabouts. Finally he was given up for lost, and his mother mourned her son as dead. Then, a few weeks ago, a lad appeared in Los Angeles and said he was Walter.Collins. He was in charge of police officials and here is the story they told:

"Walter" had been turned over to them by the police of Illinois. When Mrs. Collins' son was reported missing his picture was printed on circulars and these were widely distributed over the country. The Illinois officers said they recognized "Walter" from one of these pictures.

It was a strange case, the Illinois officers said, for the lad at first had denied his identity. Then, after long and patient questioning, he had confessed that he was "Walter Collins" and had seemed anxious to return to his "mother" in Los Angeles.

But Mrs. Collins' joy at the restoration of her "son" was tempered with apprehension. "Yes," 'she said, "he looks like Walter. And in some ways he acts like my son. But still I'm not certain about it. You see. Walter was quiet and well behaved. He always called me 'mother.' This child calls me 'ma,' and at times he is hard to handle. I certainly hope he is my son—but somehow I can't bring myself to believe it"

Then the experts raised their eyebrows in surprise. For it is a very unusual-thing for a mother not to know her own child. So far as they were concerned there was no doubt of "Walter's" identity. And they based their belief upon seemingly convincing evidence.

When "Walter" was brought to Los Angeles it was apparent that his memory had been affected by his five months with the kidnapers. He did act a bit strange, the psychologists and police officials agreed, so they planned and executed an elaborate series of tests to prove that the boy really was Walter Collins.

First, the lad was asked to take a man to the house where he used to live. He "remembered" the man, and to the satisfaction of the authorities, he led his companion straight to Mrs. Collins' front porch nor would he be thrown off the track by suggestions of other routes.

Next "Walter" was taken into the homes' of several friends and asked to identify pieces of furniture with which the kidnaped child had been familiar. He met this test readily, remarking that one "former playmate"' had a new cabinet for his radio, and identifying some sketches on the living room wall of another. But. In contrast to this, he failed to remember the names of many of the boys with whom the Collins boy had played, and in some instances his "memory" failed him entirely.

The experts were convinced however. "He is your son," they told Mrs. Collins. "Evidently his abductors told him that he was to forget all about his life prior to his kidnaping, and undoubtedly they threatened him with physical violence. Under such circumstances it is thoroughly possible that the child would forget many obvious connections of memory, but just the same we are sure he is Walter Collins."

Still Mrs. Collins was not convinced and at last a new test was devised. Walter Collins' closest companion and dearest friend was “Tiny,” a small black spaniel. Men's judgment might err, the experts conceded, but the dog would recognize his playmate of six months before. So they agreed that “Tiny” should decide.

Again the opinion of the experts was vindicated. No sooner did "Tiny" see "Walter" than he rushed to him, licked his hands, and evidenced every sign of affection. "That proves it," said the experts—and this time Mrs. Collins was forced to agree.

“Yes,” she said, "I suppose it does. I suppose he is Walter, after all—but I can't seem to rid myself of this lurking fear that the boy is not my son." She was advised, by the psychologists to take objective measures to free herself from this haunting suspicion, and she joined with them in planning to send "Walter" to camp, where he might start life anew and forget his chaotic past.

For a week or so everything was considered satisfactorily settled. The psychologists spent many hours going over their notes on the strange case. “Walter” had been very reluctant to tell about his "abduction." He furnished only meagre details. He was playing; he said, when a man told him that his mother wanted him to have new clothes. The man would buy them, said "Walter," so he went alone with the stranger.

Then he told fragmentary stories of how he wandered about the country, living a hobo existence -- how his captors tried to make him steal and how he refused; and finally how they abandoned him. He got work on a farm, he said, and that was where the Illinois authorities found him. His story, however, was very hazy on all important points.

The experts had little trouble in finding a motive for the kidnapping: Walter's father is in Folsom Penitentiary, where he is serving a long term. He is a "straw boss." Placed over a group, of other convicts, and most of them are degenerates. Several of them have been released since Walter's father entered the prison, and two men in particular recently were freed. The authorities surmised that Walter was kidnaped in revenge for some actual or fancied wrongs in the prison, and they expressed the opinion that he would return to normalcy if given an opportunity to find new friendships and "establish confidence" in someone.

And then, the other day, like a bolt from the blue, came new revelations. Police had uncovered traces of a "murder farm" in another part of California. They were. Looking for a woman and her son, believed implicated in the murder of four boys, and they picked up a boy who gave the name of "Clark" and told of having been held at the farm, and then of escaping.

Could “Clark” identify any of the "murder farm" victims? He could -- and he told of two of the boys. One was "Walter Collins," he said.

"But," police objected, "Walter Collins has returned home. He is back with his mother, and has told all about his abduction. Surely Walter Collins couldn’t have been a ‘murder farm victim.’”

But young Clark was adamant, so a new check-up was started, and it was then that the police, the psychologists and even “Tiny” got the shock of their lives. The returned “Walter” was closely questioned -- and finally he broke down. “No, I am not Walter Collins,” he said. “I was only playing that I was!”

The authorities were astounded. They hardly could believe their ears for they had been thoroughly convinced of “Walter’s” identity. “But,” objected the psychologists, “this boy must be Walter Collins. Didn’t he lead a man to his home? Didn't he recognize furniture, in the homes of his friends? Didn't he pass all of our intricate tests -- and, finally, didn’t the dog recognize him?"

"That may be," replied Mrs Collins, "but I felt all along that this child was not my son, and believe his confession. He is not my Walter.”

The examination proceeded, and the deeper the experts delved into the strange case the more mystified they became. Finally they have, been forced to give up in bewilderment. Who and where, is Walter Collins? No one seems able to answer.

The boy from the Illinois farm said he was Walter Collins, and he “proved” it to the satisfaction of the authorities. Now he says he is not Walter Collins, and his new story is so plausible that the authorities have been forced to agree that it sounds true. He does not even know his own name, he says, and he simply posed as the Collins boy because he was tired of working on the farm.

Meanwhile, the Clark boy sticks to his story that Walter Collins was a victim of brutal murder at the “murder, farm”, and plice are making every effort to identify the identity of remains found at the farm.

Two of the most, remarkable things in connection with the case are the certainty with which the authorities accepted the testimony of Tiny as final against the doubt of the mother, and the way psychologists, after trying every scientific test known to man, finally relied on the age-old test of whether the dog would recognise the boy or not.

There was seemingly good foundation for the dog test. The ability of dogs to recognize their masters has been an acknowledged fact for some thousands of years.

In relating the story of Ulysses’s return home from his wanderings in disguise as a beggar, the poer Homer narrated how the dogs were undeceived by the warrior’s tatters. They came and licked his hands and jumped all over him in gladness at his return.

There have been many instances in the courts of the United States where disputes have arisen over the ownership of dogs and have been decided by letting each of the claimants call the animals involved and declaring the owners to be the ones to which the dogs responded most enthusiastically.

So the people of Los Angeles were quite contented in their almost unanimous opinion that the real Walter had returned.

What really happened to Walter Collins may possibly never be known, but authorities agree that his strange case has contributed much in the annals of psychological knowledge. The specialists vindicate themselves in very plausible fashion. The admit that empirical reasoning must be applied in the realm of psychology: deductions must be based on past experiences.

“For example”, they say, “at first, the logical solution to the affair seemed to lie in the fact that the returned boy, whom we assumed to be the missing Walter had closed aisles of memory, as we say in the profession. This seemed to be borne out when the murder farm story came to light. We believed that Walter had been on that farm and that the events there had been responsible.

“His brain was tangled, so we thought, and that would easily explain the “closed aisles of memory.” The history of psychology is filled with similar examples.

“When the lad returned to his 'home,' he found his ‘mother’ acting strangely toward him. Of course, this is explained now, and Mrs Collins' conduct is entirely justified, but certainly it appeared at first that his more or less cold welcome had served only to increase the cloudiness which enveloped his brain. We believed that his condition actually was intensified by the circumstances of his return and we were ready to accept many discrepancies in his story. We expected them as the natural result of his experience and his cool reception upon his return.”

Thus the “mystery boy” has furnished Los Angeles experts with the most baffling enigma they have faced for years. He convinced them that he was one person, and now he has convinced them that he is someone else. What next? Certainly the police can’t answer that question. They only fear that “Walter” will again change his story and if he does, they’re afraid that he’ll be able to convince them that he is a third person! And that would be an awful mess, everybody agrees.

making a template drawing to get a clear vision of the mask your masking

I am making mask templates for an upcoming Garden Party event here in Yellowknife in June 2012, I am going to be operating a mask making station and I am greeting a simple mask making station where people can come and make masks using these templates… I am expecting to make about 200 masks over the 4 days I am working with the event so I must design and make a mask that anyone can put together. I also what to keep the design simple and fun so any person making the mask can get as much play out of them as possible with minimal art skill and effort, but maximize their creativity which will come out when they paint the mask.

Now that I have my perfect mask Template it’s time to deign my character… this is a simple bear mask design I am also making a fox and an owl from the same template. Which poses a real design challenge for me because, I am making hundreds of templates personally drawing and cutting out pieces for this project so I need to keep it simple for me and still have masks that look great and like the animals.

I take another full sheet of paper and fold it in half, and then trace half the mask template like I did before… You can repeat the same trick as before to create symmetry with your mask so that your mask will have the same size ears or whatever features you want to make for your mask. Once you have a rough mask template it’s time to create the features… this is my simple bear mask I have labeled each part of the mask as you can see and put the templates of to the left side of this image.

Please note!
That these are not the final template I will be using but they will be used to give me some general idea how the mask is going to look once I have it together. Please go to the next photo to see more about this mask making process

Roll up! Roll up!

The newest attraction to arrive at Brixton Zoo has been shown to the public for the very first time today. The Zoo managed to get 'Animal' from The Jim Henson company due to a conservation scheme that has been in place since both parties signed up to the Drummer Awareness Initiative in 2004.

‘Animal’ is believed to be the sole surviving member of a 1975 genetic experiment by Dr Jim Henson in an attempt to create the perfect drummer. Genetic testing has been inconclusive although there are indications that his D.N.A contains fragments from Keith Moon and Mick Fleetwood as well as a diverse range of other sources. His legendary percussion skills are rivalled only by his mother, Laverne - although her whereabouts are currently unknown. He has been known to eat just about anything - from a drum set to pieces of glass - so please be careful with your belongings.

This really is a big step forward for Muppet conservation and a massive coup for Brixton Zoo as Animal is a worldwide attraction and will bring much needed revenue into the establishment. The Drummer Awareness Initiative is also very pleased as in recent years they have seen a steady decline in drummers due to the advancements in technology and are hoping 'Animal' could possibaly drive a surge in drumming being taken up in schools once more.

Cheers

The wombat (I think that's what it was?) wasn't out at the time or else I would have snapped a shot of that one as well since I've never seen one before in person. :P

Potions Classroom
Hidden deep in Hogwarts dungeons is the Potions Classroom, a room lined with dusty shelves full of peculiar jars and bottles which was the haven of Professors Snape and Slughorn.
For Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone the classroom was actually shot on-location at Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire, England. For subsequent films a version of the set was built here at Leavesden with some additional magic touches. More than five hundred bottles line the walls of the classroom, many with their own handcrafted labels.

Self-Stiring Cauldron
To add a bit more wizardry to the classroom, John Richardson's Special Effects team designed this cauldron that mechanically stirs itself.

Gilded Archways
These brass-leafed archways contain cryptic Latin and English inscriptions of potions ingredients and rare minerals, all selected from ancient alchemy recipes.

Giner Roots and Salamanders
Among the ingredients kept on the classroom shelves are plastic animals from Regent's Park Zoo gift shop, baked animal bones from a local butcher shop and dried leaves & herbs.

A Magical Transformation
Portions of this room were constructed for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone but since then this room has gone through several changes.
The room was first seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as the small closet where Fluffy the three-headed dog guarded the trap door leading to the Philosopher's Stone.
For Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the production team revamped the space to create Professor Snape's office.
In 2008 the set was redressed again for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, as the potions classroom and the entire room was made larger.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

Happy Tails: Lucky Boy and Jango Fett
animal movie
Our beloved cat, Cisco, died of cancer leaving my other cat, Slater, very lonely so our vet suggested we get two kittens to keep Slater company. Our family traveled over to Lollypop Farm and found two brothers to love. My son named one Jango Fett after a character in his favorite movie series, Star Wars, and my daughter named the other Lucky Boy because he has a bent ear and she felt he was "lucky" that someone could look past his disability and love him.

As you can see from the pictures they look alike but each has his own personality. They are both friendly cats and love to sit on your lap and cuddle. At times they act like dogs, like when they run to the door to greet us or follow us around the house. My eight-year-old daughter reads to them and plays school with them and they will sit with her for hours and will be her "students." Lucky is a little more mischievous as you can see from the picture where he has made himself at home amongst my Christmas Village.

Slater loves them and during the day all three of them will nap together. The cats have helped Slater become less sedentary and he has lost weight because he chases the young ones around the house (The vet is glad since Slater was about 5 lbs. overweight.) At times I forget Slater is 14 years old because the new cats have brought out his playfulness again.

Warm Regards,
Michelle M.

Triceratops

Some cool animals that are extinct images:

Triceratops
animals that are extinct
It may sound strange to say a dinosaur is loveable, but there is something about Triceratops that especially appeals to children. Maybe it is the charming personality of Cera in Land Before Time (1988), or maybe it is the large but not threatening, somewhat appealing look of the dinosaur itself, but for many kids, the highlight of their visit to Dinosaur World is meeting the Three-horn family.

A huge animal, with several ways of protecting itself, including a tough, leathery skin (that scientists have found fossilized impressions of), it had no real enemies. Some scientists speculate that it might have been particularly aggressive. It is believed to be one of the last of the dinosaurs to go extinct.

Plains Bison
animals that are extinct
The plains bison (Bison bison bison) is one of two subspecies/ecotypes of the American bison, the other being the wood bison (Bison bison athabascae). Furthermore, it has been suggested that the Plains Bison consists of a northern (Bison bison montanae) and a southern subspecies, bringing the total to three. However, this is generally not supported.

Plains bison have been introduced into a number of locations around North America. The farthest north introduction occurred in 1928 when the Alaska Game Commission brought bison to the area of present day Delta Junction. Bison taken from this transplant were also introduced to other Alaska locations, including Farewell and Chitina. The Delta Junction herd has fared best, with a population of multiple hundreds throughout the late 20th century. This herd is popular with hunters interested in hundreds of pounds of high quality meat, but has been a problem for farming operations in the area.

In 2006, plains bison from Elk Island National Park in Alberta were released into Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan. This marks the first time plains bison have wandered the short-grass prairies of Canada since their near-extinction at the turn of the 20th century.

A herd of approximately 550 of these animals lives in, and can be seen at, the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma. The herd was started in 1907 with stock from the Bronx Zoo. Fifteen animals were shipped to Oklahoma, where they had already become extinct due to excessive hunting and over harvesting.
