Now, I don't meant to be controversial with these pictures, but this is what we saw whilst out walking. I've never seen this kind of thing before but got back home and did a quick search and found other instance of this happening elsewhere. I think the farmer or somebody who works on the farm has killed and hung out the moles like baubles on trees to show people how competent they are at catching moles. I personally don't think this is nice and should not be on show. Some will call this cruelty, others will think it's an old tradition. Have your own opinion but please keep this opinion to yourself. I'm not into animal cruelty. There must have been 15-30 moles hung out. Poor little things, I know they are considered a pest but it was a sad sight.

Where Are You?

UPDATE -- June 28, 2007: The noise and commotion of the shelter are taking a toll on Sasha's emotions. She really needs to find a new home or foster family soon. If you are interested in helping this great dog, please call Beth at the Orange County Virginia Animal Shelter at: 540-672-1124.

Note: Out-of-state adoptions can sometimes be arranged.

__________________________

I've been looking right and left and I still can't find you. I know you must be out there somewhere. You are, aren't you? Someone out there can love me, can't you? I'm not a bad doggie, I'm really not, I just want to be your only doggie. Please, please give me a chance. I know I may not have many years left, but please give me the chance to live out my life being loved.

Beth at the Orange County Animal Shelter has been begging and pleading for months now for someone to please help this dog. Sasha is a young acting 12-year-old Doberman pinscher, a beautiful russet brown in color she weighs in just under 90 pounds. Her tail was docked. She is spayed, vaccinated, tested and wormed, and ready to go home with you. She is always lived as an indoor companion dog, and is not used other dogs. She was always the only pet and she does not know how to share her space with other pets. She is used to older children who treat her with respect and kindness and she is housebroken

Nervous in new situations, she does not understand why her family threw her away and Sasha has become scared and depressed. When she first arrived at the shelter several months ago, she had a number of untreated health problems. Undiagnosed hypothyroidism was making her uncomfortable, lethargic and sluggish. Now treated, she simply need a couple of pills every day to keep her feeling good and active. She also had a raging urinary tract infection, but instead of being given medical attention, she was dumped at the pound, because of her frequent urination. Now that that has been treated, and she is cured, she has no more bladder problems and no more pain. Can you imagine living for months with the pain of a bladder infection and being punished every time you wet yourself because you weren't allowed into the bathroom? Can you imagine the humiliation this poor dog has gone through?

She has a fatty tumor on her chest which has tested non-cancerous. This is a very common condition in older dogs, and usually results in no health problems. Her fur has grown back since the picture was taken, and she's getting her thyroid medication regularly. And now she is one gorgeous lady!

Sasha desperately wants out of the loud, lonely, crowded shelter environment and into a loving home where she has a nice soft bed, plenty of treats and someone who cares about her. She deserves better than this; won't you please be her angel?

Call Beth, 540-672-1124, at the Orange County Animal Shelter, and come visit her today, please.

Pet of the Week: Jill, 10400773

Meet Jill! Jill is a 5-year-old Bluetick/Coonhound mix who has spent most of her life as an outdoor dog. She is currently seeking her very own best friend.

This loveable hound enjoys taking walks where she can check out all the wonderful smells that turn hounds on. Jill is a little fearful of sudden movements, especially anything over her head, so a house with kids over the age of 6 is recommended.

Like most hounds, she finds cats, small dogs and other tiny creatures irresistible, and thinks they are meant to be chased! She would do best in a home without these temptations.

At 55 pounds, she is a good sized dog who would love lots of room to roam. Might this be your home?

Sometimes when I have my glasses off and I see both dogs coming at me, I can't tell which one is which, but rest assured, he's as smooth as can be.

As a consequence of him being so skinny for the time being, Zelda looks obeese in comparison, even before she put on a pound or so of jealousy weight.

Swift Creek Stewardship and Recovery Act Project

Image by Forest Service - Northern Region
(script included at the end)

This video highlights a project on the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act aimed to getting work done on the ground and provide jobs that support the local economy. This project was also funded and supported by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation because it involves providing critical habitat for elk.

This 200 acre project is on the Sula Ranger District of the Bitterroot National Forest. The project involves thinning and experimental soil subsoiling of terraced lands. A local contractor was awarded the project contract.

Work got underway in the summer of 2010.

-SCRIPT-

The purpose of this particular project the reason it actually came about was the Recovery Act and that the jobs created here are local. We have local operators here. They're spending the dollars in our community and putting lots of people back to work.

You know, this is the county that we live in and all of our employees live in. And the majority of the money we spend stays here. So it means a lot to us and the community.

It's very expensive to use machinery to do that type of work, and without the recovery dollars, this project wouldn't have been possible. We had to build the subsoiler shank for the decompaction, and we had to modify some things on the head.

We actually bought the disc mulcher head for this job and modified it to take the shank on it so that we could do both tasks with one pass through the woods.

We worked to create a 200-acre project of terraced plantation thinning, and it's a research project where we are going in and masticating some of the trees in sort of a--almost a commercial thinning stage, because they're fairly large-diameter, from 8 to 16 inches. However, there isn't much of a market for that type of tree currently on the market, so we decided we would work on a research project to thin 200 acres to prevent mountain pine beetle infestation. So we have a masticator on-site thinning the trees down and putting wood chips on-site. We have a soil masticator which rips the terraced lands, which allows decompaction. And we were also able to put a local business back to work under the Recovery Act. So we're very excited about this project. We have 13,000 acres of these terraced stands. And we hope that in the future, if this project works and the stand responds well and it reduces the mountain pine beetle infestation because we've allowed these trees to become more resilient, that as we move into the future, we'll be able to thin more stands. It's also an exciting project because we've partnered with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

And what we hope to see the project accomplish is improvements of habitat for elk and other wildlife species, mainly in terms of increases of both quantity and quality of the native browse species. Just think that's just a wonderful way for us to greatly increase our capacity to get work done. It's--because we have an agreement with them and they oversee a lot of the particulars, it's real positive for us, and they are getting some meaningful work done for the foundation in terms of improving some elk habitat, calving area. We've got an elk herd of approximately 200 animals in that area.

We're looking forward to more projects like this in the future. This is the type of stuff we like being involved in.

The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012

Hagrid's Hut
This is the home of Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts and later Professor of Care of Magical Creatures. During Harry's third year his new post came with some additional benefits including the addition of a second room.
This set was actually built in two different scales. The larger scale set was used to correctly film characters of 'regular' size. A smaller scale set, replete with smaller-sized props was also built to make Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) seem much larger.
Set decorators filled the hut with an abundance of cages, each containing peculiar real animals and items such as hairless cats, fruit bats and ostrich eggs.
Filmmakers relied on some clever tricks to make Hagrid seem larger than other characters. One of them was to have Hagrid sit in a tall chair nearest the camera during a scene, whilst other characters sat in shorter chairs farther from camera.
For the filming of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the crew reconstructed Hagrid's hut on location in Glencoe, Scotland - a village in the Northwest Scottish Highlands. Construction began in picture-perfect sunshine. As soon as director Alfonso Cuaron yelled 'ACTION!' it rained continuously for five entire weeks. Instead of becoming a production headache, the dreary, grey clouds actually energized the colours of the set.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

Smithfield - Dublin

A few nice animal abuse images I found:

Smithfield - Dublin
animal abuse
Smithfield is an area on the Northside of Dublin. Its focal point is a public square, formerly an open market, now officially called Smithfield Plaza, but known locally as Smithfield Square or Smithfield Market.

Notable landmarks include the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery and the Observation Tower (now closed).

The area is known for the historical Horse market which is held on every first Sunday of the month. However, the city council is continuing with its efforts of trying to move the centuries-old horse market out of the area, with many new residents to the area, including those from the facing Smithfield Market apartments, especially uncomfortable with its atmosphere, noise, perceptions of animal abuse and neglect, and occasional bouts of violence amongst a minority of animal traders.

Although the Smithfield Horse Fair continues to draw heavy and sustained criticism from a wide range of sources, including An Garda Siochana, and the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), legal difficulties in closing down and/or moving away the market, coupled with its centuries-old heritage, have left the city council and the horse fair defenders locked in an ongoing battle without any clear resolution ahead.

Helen the Amazing Kitty - Rest in Peace

Those of you who follow my photostream know that I'm a sucker for animals with special needs. I'm sad to report that my special needs kitty, Helen the Amazing Kitty, died on May 7, 2011 of cardiac arrest brought on by severe anemia. She will be greatly missed. Rest well little "Squeakers".

We found Helen at the end of August, 2009. She was a feral cat in our town and had managed to survive two months on her own even though she was completely blind. For some reason, this kitty lacked any eyeballs at all, but that didn't stop her from living life to the fullest! She was affectionate, smart, adventurous, and....AMAZING! We could all learn a lot about how to live our lives by watching this little cat.

In August of 2010, my ex-wife moved to Texas and little Helen accompanied her on the trip. We were both worried about how she would do on the car ride and how she would adapt to her new home. She did marvelously -- better than most humans would do with that big of a change. Sadly, after less than a year in her new home, she got sick and her life ended maddenlngly early. It breaks my heart to know she's gone. She was so tenacious. Out of all of my animals, I thought for sure she would live a long, happy life because she never let anything stop her.

You can see the rest of the photos of this amazing little cat by following this URL: www.flickr.com/photos/pmarkham/sets/72157622470505575/wit...

Be sure to read the descriptions as each will share a piece of this amazing little cat's life.

Animal Place's Douglas is still a baby, although this photo makes him look like a big boy! Douglas loves hugs. Even though he was horribly treated as a younger baby, he has not held it against people.

Douglas is a "by-product" of the dairy industry. Unwanted male dairy calves are discarded at auction where people buy them for < and raise them for backyard slaughter or veal. Douglas and four other calves faced that fate, but Santa Cruz County Animal Services rescued them all, after they were being starved nearly to death.

The New Guinea Singing Dog, or Singer, is a type of dingo once found throughout New Guinea. The New Guinea Singing Dog has a distinctive and melodious howl, which is characterized by a sharp increase in pitch at the start and very high frequencies at the end. There was a time when the New Guinea Singing Dog was not considered worthy of study, since they were considered feral domestic dogs. Nowadays however, archaeozoologists who promote protection of these dogs argue that Singers are a living relic of the earliest dogs and at least a part of the heritage of the people of Papua New Guinea.

Tonight I went to take pictures of some puppies that have had a rough go of it in their short lives so far.

These puppies were rescued from a rural shelter that had no heat. Some of the puppies had frozen to death, and a call for help was put out to save the ones that were still alive. The Cincinnati HART group sent a team up to pick them up and thanks to a couple of very dedicated volunteers, the puppies are now safely at a vet where they are in quarrantine and receiving the care they need. They'll be sent out into foster homes when they're out of quarrantine.

I took the pics so that we could send them to the HART foster care distribution list.

You can help their cause by helping your local animal rescue team!

All these little sqirmy cuties will be looking for homes soon, once they're out of the vet.
