Harbor Haul Out IV
wild animals
In an ironic twist that, knowing my professor, may not have been entirely chance, today as the Harp Seal hunt began in Canada, I was headed out to find seals here in LIS.

Examining the impacts of "watching" excursions on marine mammals for one of my classes. What better way to explore it than to go out and do some watching. Some of the Harbor Seals that summer in the Gulf of Maine like to overwinter down here with us. We visited a string of haul out rocks they like to use in Fishers Island Sound today. Counted over 100 hauled out in one spot, plus at least 14 in the water. Two of the other spots each had 10-30. The last, usually a favorite had none...hauled out or in the water. Hmmm...

We stayed pretty far back generally (these are with a 400mm) after one run in to check their reaction.

A few nice animal planet images I found:

NYC - Bronx - Bronx Zoo: Aquatic Bird House - Scarlet Ibis

The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is a species of ibis that occurs in tropical South America and Trinidad and Tobago. It is the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago and is featured on their coat of arms along with the Rufous-vented Chachalaca. This species is very closely related to the American White Ibis and is sometimes considered conspecific with it.

While the species may have occurred as a natural vagrant in southern Florida in the late 1800s, all recent reports in North America have been of introduced or escaped birds. Eggs from Trinidad were placed in White Ibis nests in Hialeah Park in 1962, and the resulting population hybridised with the native ibis, producing "pink ibis" that are still occasionally seen.

Adults are 56-61 cm long and weigh 650g. They are completely scarlet, except for black wing-tips. They nest in trees use their long curved bills to probe in mud and shallow water for small crabs, mollusks, insects, and worms. To maintain their red plummage, birds need to consume plant pigments found in the diets of their prey.

Ibises are a group of long-legged wading birds in the family Threskiornithidae. The word ibis comes from Greek, originally borrowed from Ancient Egyptian hîb. According to folklore, the ibis is the last form of wildlife to take shelter prior to a hurricane and the first to reappear after the storm passes. The Sacred Ibis was also an object of religious veneration in ancient Egypt, particularly associated with the god, Thoth.

**
The Bronx Zoo, located within the Bronx Park, is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, comprising 265 acres of parklands and naturalistic habitats and home to over 4,000 animals. Focused on conservation, it opened on November 8, 1899, with 22 exhibits, 843 animals. The zoo's origins date back to 1895, with the establishment of the New york Zoological Society (NYZS), renamed Wild Conservation Scoiety (WCS) in 1993. Only the outer structure of the World of Reptiles remains much as it was in 1899. With the 1941 opening of African Plains, the Bronx Zoo was one of the first U.S. zoos to move away from cages and exhibit animals in naturalistic habitats.

It’s packed and expect to haggle is you're a lao wie. Most crickets are about 10-20 rmb, which is about 2-3 dollars. This market is also closing down and moving to join the one near the second ring road. If you need directions let me know.

How she died

How she died
all about animals
People keep asking how Bella died.
I still am not certain how it could've happened.
She was playing on this luggage roller thingy I have which I hadn't had a chance to put away after my last grocery trip Wednesday. Bella was always climbing and falling off of things. I wasn't worried about that. It was securely angled against the wall so honestly, I didn't think twice about it. If anything, I figured it would roll out from under her and she'd fall on top.
I was on Flickr checking pictures. There's a dresser that divides where my laptop/work space is and the kitchen area in my studio apartment. Things had gotten silent and I figured she'd gone to sleep someplace so got up to find her so that Squeaky could have a turn out.
This luggage roller thing somehow fell over squishing her underneath. It broke her back and the top most bar was resting on her throat when I found her. I never even heard it fall!!!
I walked around the divider and saw her and began to run screaming....
It's a nightmare I can't see to wake up from.

No, you walk round me!

One from the archives: a Galapagos lizard.

Looking back, the truly amazing thing about all the wildlife there is that the normal roles are reversed: they expect you to walk around them. This is even true of the lizards! I vividly remember standing two feet from a Blue-footed Booby and trying to get it to look at the camera. Kicking the ground and even coughing loudly failed to produce a result. Eventually I walked off, reminded of my utter insignificance.

One of the first shots taken with the 50mm f/1.4 S that I really like. I don't normally use selective color, but I think in this case, the tiny touch of pink on the nose and mouth work well; it helps with the contrast (metaphoric, not literal) between the child's toy and the refuse-laden sidewalk.

I like the glowy soft quality the f/1.4 gives this shot. I was also suprised by the strong reflection in the wet concrete.

Blink! This is Misfit's imitation of Brent.

For video of Misfit playing with the snake: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqwQUGvDiQU

Back-story: We noticed Misfit had something, and it was a snake! He dropped it into his water fountain, and we had to take it apart. We let him play with it for awhile, then put it in a bottle. The bottle drove him crazy -- he attacked the movement within every 5 minutes for days. It was his new favorite toy -- the pet of our pet. So we kept the snake in captivity for a week or so. He was not interested in our house crickets, which we joked that Misfit caught for him. After a week, it not only needed probably needed food, but also stank, so we released it. It did need to be "watered" a few times during the week, too, which no doubt increased the stink-power.

Misfit, snake.

To demonstrate an ethical and healthy life without consuming meat, of course. From their website veggieprideparade.org some of their goals:To set a positive example by standing proud and standing up for the vegan lifestyle. “To show our true love of animals, which must include farmed animals. To celebrate our healthy diet. To educate about the issues surrounding today's cruel, unsustainable, and exploitative meat-, egg-, and dairy-production systems. To encourage meat eaters—through advocacy and example—to join us in our compassionate way of living.”

While I am shooting and keeping my opinions to myself, the smell of roasting meat drifting from the surrounding restaurants was making my mouth water.

A troupe of little people in chicken suits flocked to McDonald's in Times Square brandishing signs declaring, "I Am Not a Nugget!" The diminutive dancers from Centerfold Strips—which bills itself as the number one source for midget and dwarf strippers—made their entrance in a pink stretch Mini Cooper and pound ed the pavement in a choreographed musical protest against McDonald's outdated and unkind slaughter practices.

Chickens who are raised for McNuggets are killed using an old-fashioned method that causes millions of birds to have their wings broken and many to be scalded to death in defeathering tanks. Often the chickens are still conscious when they are sent, upside down, to the knife. A less cruel slaughter method—and one that is already used by McDonald's European suppliers—is available, but the company refuses to require its U.S. suppliers to upgrade to it.

"We hope our little protest calls attention to the big cruelty that McDonald's inflicts on chickens every day," -- PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews, who was on the scene.

Have a look at the blog post at Youssouf's Sheeplog with this photo.
