______________________________

Nearly 200 members and supporters of The Humane Society of the United States joined together on Wed, March 24th, 2010 in Albany for the New York State Humane Lobby Day.

The animal advocates met with 123 of the 212 state legislators on pending legislation to strengthen anti-animal fighting laws, prohibit the canned shoots of captive exotic animals, crack down on puppy mills, and protect farm animals from cruelty.

The event was co-sponsored by Farm Sanctuary, Humane Society of New York, and New York State Humane Association. Senator Toby Ann Stavisky received a humane legislator award to commend her support and dedication to animal protection issues, and spoke about the bill she sponsored to strenghten NY's anti-animal fighting laws. Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal spoke about the bills she sponsored to protect farm animals from cruelty.

Nice Animals That Are Extinct photos

A few nice animals that are extinct images I found:

Kruger II
animals that are extinct
Elephants are large land mammals in two extant genera of the family Elephantidae: Elephas and Loxodonta, with the third genus Mammuthus extinct. Three species of elephant are generally recognized today: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant (also known as the Indian elephant). However, some researchers postulate the existence of a fourth species of elephant in West Africa. All other species and genera of Elephantidae are extinct. Most have been extinct since the last ice age, although dwarf forms of mammoths might have survived as late as 2,000 BCE. Elephants and other Elephantidae were once classified with other thick-skinned animals in a now invalid order, Pachydermata.

Elephants are the largest living land animals on Earth today. The elephant's gestation period is 22 months, the longest of any land animal. At birth, an elephant calf typically weighs 105 kilograms (230 lb). They typically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years. The largest elephant ever recorded was shot in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 24,000 lb (11,000 kg), with a shoulder height of 3.96 metres (13.0 ft), a metre (yard) taller than the average male African elephant. The smallest elephants, about the size of a calf or a large pig, were a prehistoric species that lived on the island of Crete during the Pleistocene epoch.

Elephants are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence, where their intelligence level is thought to be equal to that of dolphins and primates. Aristotle once said the elephant was "the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind." The word "elephant" has its origins in the Greek ἐλέφας, meaning "ivory" or "elephant".

According to observations, healthy adult elephants have no natural predators,[19] although lions may take calves or weak individuals.[20][21] They are, however, threatened by human intrusion and poaching.

Bowling my 200 game

A few nice animals games images I found:

Bowling my 200 game
animals games
It's been quite a few years since I've been bowling without my kids. So, it was a bit odd to get out and bowl with a pitcher of beer at the alley.

I ended up driving south down 51, not really knowing where I was going, with a dead cellphone battery. When I was originally invited along, this place was described as being "down 51". In the last few seconds of juice on my battery, I was told it was in Belle Vernon -- which is a bit farther than just "down 51." Oh well.

It turns out that the guys I was meeting there had to make a side trip first, so after I found the place, I ended up hanging out for 45 minutes before they got there. That turned out to be a great thing actually.

While I was standing there against the wall, watching the Eagles-Saints game (Sat Jan 13), I recognized a face in the crowd of bowlers. It turned out to be an old fraternity brother of mine from CMU (STG, fka ZBT) -- I hadn't seen him about 15 years. So, we had a chance to chat a bit and get caught up.

After our crew finally arrived and got started, I had to go find a lane ball, since I didn't have my own ball and shoes with me. That turned out to be an even better thing. I've been saying for a while now that my ball (16lb) was just too heavy -- I really don't know what I was thinking when I got that thing.

So, armed with a lighter lane ball. I set off. My first game was a very typical one for me - 129. Then, somehow, the stars were in alignment, or something... Game 2 was an all-time best score for me (by at least 30 pins) and my first 200 game ever!
Game 3 was well back towards reality, but still much better than my usual third-game-with-tired-arm-from-too-heavy-ball score, and was a 155.

Suffice to say... I'll be leaving my own ball at home for next weekend's Bowling for Animals

But... I think I'll bring my own shoes though...

Creative Wombat - Common Wombat (Vombatus Ursinus)
wildlife animals
For February Scavenge Challenge # 2 Easy one - just find something starting with "Cr..." (yeah, like "Crow!")

CRITTER ! Thanks BZ

Wombats are Australian marsupials (pouched mammals) native to mainland Australia and Tasmania and have very short muscular legs and are the closest relative to the Koala. They have a backwards facing pouch so that when they are nursing young in their pouch they can still dig burrows and not fill their pouch with soil. The wombat establishes a range for itself of up to 23 hectares and digs a tunnel system consisting of a main tunnel of 2 to 20 metres long with many side tunnels.

A unique defence of the wombat is the toughened, very thick hide over its rear. This cartilaginous plate over the rump and the lack of a decent tail, makes it very difficult for a predator to extricate a wombat from its burrow if it goes in headfirst then blocks the entrance with its rump

Wombats are herbivores, feeding on grasses and roots and they dig long extensive burrow systems with their powerful claws. Although the wombats at Zoos or WIldlife parks are diurnal, in the wild, wombats are nocturnal and will rarely venture out during the day.

Habitat destruction has had a major impact on the wombat. Although they are mostly protected, they still fall prey to dingoes, foxes. Tasmanian devils (in Tasmania), dog attacks and many become road kill. Young wombats may be taken by eagles, owls and eastern quolls. Many wombats fall prey to sarcoptic mange which has been introduced by human activity.

Photographed at Shoalhaven Zoo, Nowra which is more like an animal resort.

Quote from Lancaster Farming (October 27, 1990): Death losses during transport are too high -- amounting to more than million per year. But it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out why we load as many hogs on a truck as we do. It's cheaper... Even with a zero death rate that might be associated with providing more space on the truck, the hogs we save would not be enough to pay for the increased transportation costs of hauling fewer hogs on a load.

Smithfield Plaza, but known locally as Smithfield Square or Smithfield Market.
animal abuse
Dublin City Council has made a number of attempts to upgrade this area but usually after any work has been completed the area rapidly declines because of serious anti-social behaviour.

The area is known for the historical Horse market which is held on every first Sunday of the month.

However, the city council is continuing with its efforts of trying to move the centuries-old horse market out of the area, with many new residents to the area, including those from the facing Smithfield Market apartments, especially uncomfortable with its atmosphere, noise, perceptions of animal abuse and neglect, and occasional bouts of violence amongst a minority of animal traders, although a discreet police (Garda) presence helps to maintain order. Although the Smithfield Horse Fair continues to draw heavy and sustained criticism from a wide range of sources, including An Garda Siochana, and the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), legal difficulties in closing down and/or moving away the market, coupled with its centuries-old heritage, have left the city council and the horse fair defenders locked in an ongoing battle without any clear resolution ahead.

You can't see it in this picture, but the base of the lion's plinth says "BARYE 1796-1875". This confused me - was a real lion? named Barye? who lived to 79? - until I looked it up and discovered that Antoine-Louis Barye was a sculptor famous for his animals. I guess this was in his memory? Still kind of weird.

Deforestation
Collage
160 X 110 cms
Every photo is cut out of National Geographic magazines and glued down onto collaging board.
This collage took me around 4 months of fulltime work…
I am raising funds for a Borneo based charity called HUTAN. I have so far raised more than 2,000€ (2010-2011)through poster sales. Please go to www.hutan.org.my
Amongst the details in this collage you can find:

A herd of cows grazing on a newly deforested region of Brazil’s Amazon basin. Fast food restaurants in the U.S.A. including McDonald’s buy this meat, even though they deny any involvement in deforestation.

To the right, there is a huge area being cleared for growing Soya beans. This crop is then distributed worldwide mainly as animal feed.

Towards the lower centre one can find an illegal farmer, busy planting palms for the palm oil trade. A number of animals are trying to dissuade him: a mouse with a STOP sign, a monkey dropping a large stone on his hand, whilst a giant gerbil is about to give him the fright of his life. Palm oil ends up in a wide variety of products, from fast foods, chocolate and soap to cosmetics and even cleaning products.

Most of the animals in this collage have taken up arms in a desperate attempt to save their ever-shrinking habitat. You can find:
A snow monkey armed with a rifle and cannon.
A grasshopper mouse (shouting orders) equipped with a decorative dagger.
A tiny poison arrow frog wearing a helmet, armed with a silver plated pistol.
A lemur handing over an M-16 assault rifle to a giant kangaroo rat.
A team of meerkats moving a heavy machine-gun into position.
A grizzly bear sniper.
A tortoise complete with crash helmet and a delivery of grenades.
A trio of chimpanzees are launching grenades at a lumberjack about 3 metres away. If you look really closely you can even see their selection of rocket-propelled grenades and launcher!
A clan of prairie dogs are awarding a veteran fighter with a medal, whilst to the left a Philippine tarsier is suffering from shell shock.
A mouse can be seen whispering death threats into the ear of a lumberjack, but he’s closed his eyes and put earplugs in…what a coward!
Elsewhere, some naughty proboscis monkeys are tying a lumberjack’s legs together.
A wild cat is about to shred a logger’s hand to ribbons and a man carrying a large tree trunk is being attacked by a mouse, 2 prairie puppies and a squirrel.
Sadly, a lot of the animals are under threat from exploitation. Here is a list of some of the endangered species I have included in the collage. You can find:
Brown howler monkey (population declining)
Buffy tufted-ear marmoset (vunerable, less than 10 000 individuals)
Burrowing bettong (population 5 000 and rising)
Crowned lemur (vunerable, declining population)
Gee’s golden langur (endangered, less than 3 000 individuals)
Giant kangaroo rat (endangered, population unknown)
Golden bamboo lemur (critically endangered, less than 5 000 individuals)
Golden crowned sifaka lemur (critically endangered, 6 000-10 000 individuals)
Golden headed lion tamarin (endangered, less than 2 000 individuals)
Hispaniolan solenodon (critically endangered)
Kinkajou (population declining but not threatened)
Malagasay civet (vunerable but unknown population)
Margay cat (population declining)
Pileated gibbon (vunerable, 30 000 and declining)
Philippine tarsier (rare but population unknown)
Proboscis monkey (endangered, less than 1000 individuals)
Rabbit-eared bandicoot (vunerable, less than 10 000 individuals)
Red ruffed lemur (endangered but unknown population)
Slender loris (population declining)
Sokoke scops owl (vunerable, less than 1,000 pairs)
Spectacled bear (vunerable, 5 000-30 000 individuals)
Sumatran rhinoceros (endangered, estimated at 400 individuals)
Western barred bandicoot (vunerable, less than 10 000 individuals)

about endangered animals
This is an Amur Leopard, the most endangered cat in the world. The wild population is about 50 animals and there are about 200 more in captivity. The wild Amur Leopards live in the Sikhote-Alin mountains in Russia, where they face threats from habitat loss, loss of prey species and conflict with humans.

Jungle Cat World have a daughter and mother that take part in a captive breeding program. This is the daughter.
