Brown boobies are found worldwide around tropical and subtropical seas. Now, please, try not to laugh at their name! They do not spend their entire lives at sea (which is why this exhausted booby stopped for a breather on the diveboat), but they do conduct all of their hunting on the ocean. As you can guess, the booby's favorite food is fish. Boobies and their relatives, gannets, possess streamlined bodies designed for plunging headfirst into the water and snatching fish far below the surface. This gives them a significant advantage over most other seabirds, which cannot dive very deep (if they can even dive at all), and allows them to catch fish that would otherwise be unreachable. Grouper are one of those fish you'll never forget. They can be quite inquisitive, especially if you have food, and they have an insatiable appetite. This particular grouper, known as the Malabar grouper, approached me and my fellow divers without fear. Malabar groupers aren't the largest of the groupers, but they can still get quite big. They can attain a length of 4 feet (1.2 meters) and weigh 330 lbs (150 kg). They are found throughout the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific, from east Africa and the Red Sea to northeast Australia, Japan, and Tonga.
