The Runt Of The Litter?

The Runt Of The Litter?

Two monarch butterfly caterpillars feeding on a milkweed plant. Butterflies and moths undergo complete metamorphosis, in which there are four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult.
Monarch development from egg to adult is completed in about 30 days.

Larva (Caterpillar; 10-14 days)
It is during this stage that Monarchs do all of their growing. They begin life by eating their eggshell, and then move on to the plant on which they were laid.

When the caterpillar has become too large for its skin, it molts, or sheds its skin. At first, the new skin is very soft, and provides little support or protection. The new skin soon hardens and molds itself to the caterpillar, which often eats the shed skin before starting in anew on plant food! The intervals between molts are called instars. Monarchs go through five instars . These two caterpillars are at two different instar stages, hence the difference in size.

Gilbert is a beautiful nubian goat who has been at the sanctuary since 2001. He was going to be roasted for a BBQ but was thankfully rescued by animal control. He too is shy around people, though he'll sometimes let staff give him a good back massage.

He lived a good, long life at Animal Place. He will be missed.

My New Obsession

As you may already know, Me and Michael took the girls to the lake. One of the women who live down by the lake were telling us about how her neighbor was moving to the city, and didn't know what to do with her koi fish that were currently living in her front pond. So her husband dumped them into the lake the night before the move, and by the time the locals realized what had happened the couple had been long gone. The woman begged us to take them, and at least flush them away. But as you could imagine, the girls were deeply touched by the little koi's ill fate, so they pushed Michael into taking them home. So for about four hours we thrashed through the lake, catching koi. It was easy at first, because most of them stayed in the shallow region of the lake near the grassy area. A few big ones went as deep as eighteen feet. We caught sixteen koi, one of them completely "flipped out" when Lauren stuffed him in her bathing suit, and ended up dying of fright. I love these fish, they're are so elegant and friendly, except for one, who Anna Maria concluded was either pregnant or on her period. (the things kids learn). So all the girls are downstairs in the kitchen coming up with names for their fish. Of course, they named one Jake. So far we have Selena Gomez, Lil Wayne III, Kenan Thompson, and Cinderblock.

NYC - Bronx - Bronx Zoo: Jungle World - Javan Lutung
animal planet
The Javan Lutung (Trachypithecus auratus), also known as the Ebony Lutung, Ebony Langur and Javan Langur, is an Old World monkey from the Colobinae subfamily. It is normally glossy black with a brownish tinge to its legs, sides, and "sideburns". It is found and endemic to the island of Java, as well as on several of the surrounding Indonesian islands. One population in eastern Java has reddish brown fur like some of those picture here.

Like all langurs, this species' tail is noticeably long, measuring up to 87 cm in length while the body is only around 55 cm long. The Javan Lutung inhabits the interior and peripheral areas of rainforests. This primate is diurnal and arboreal, and its diet is primarily herbivorous. Like other langurs, the Javan Lutung is a social animal, living in groups of around seven, with one or two adult males in the group.

The Bronx Zoo, located within the Bronx Park, is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, comprising 265 acres of parklands and naturalistic habitats and home to over 4,000 animals. Focused on conservation, it opened on November 8, 1899, with 22 exhibits, 843 animals. The zoo's origins date back to 1895, with the establishment of the New york Zoological Society (NYZS), renamed Wild Conservation Scoiety (WCS) in 1993. Only the outer structure of the World of Reptiles remains much as it was in 1899. With the 1941 opening of African Plains, the Bronx Zoo was one of the first U.S. zoos to move away from cages and exhibit animals in naturalistic habitats.

Ivory Walruses

Color of the Week: Ivory

February 5, 2008

These walruses were carved by Randall Jones (we call him Bidoo). He is one of my very favorite carvers in Shishmaref. I bought these two walruses (walri?) last fall.

One of the things I love the best about Bidoo's carvings is the amazing detail. His pieces are always very exact.

I've built up quite an ivory collection since living in Shishmaref. I didn't buy much our first year because I was uncomfortable knowing what was a quality piece and a fair price. Now that I've been around a little longer I know what to look for.

Steve always grumbles when I put down a good chunk of change for a piece of ivory. He always translates the price into the number of games or movies he could have bought. I promised him that the ivory will maintain its value for a long time. Games and movies only depreciate (unless they're in mint condition, which ours are NOT). :)

6/30 - Kerry the Koala is with Smelly Belly today. Even though Smelly Belly told Kerry to stay still and wait for the photo to be taken. So how does it hang on to trees?

Midway Treats
facts about animals
Whether you are looking for treats for your taste buds, or your other four senses, the Midway is a great place to visit during the Iowa State Fair.

One of the most iconic parts of a Midway is its carousel. (From Wikipedia) A carousel (from French carrousel, from Italian carosello), or merry-go-round, is an amusement ride consisting of a rotating circular platform with seats for riders. The "seats" are traditionally in the form of rows of wooden horses or other animals mounted on posts, many of which are moved up and down via gearwork to simulate galloping, to the accompaniment of looped circus music. This leads to one of the alternative names, the galloper. Other popular names are roundabout and flying horses.

Little known fact about Carousels - In the UK and Europe, merry-go-rounds (as they are most often referred to in those countries) usually turn clockwise (see photograph at top), while in North America, carousels typically go anti-clockwise (or "counter-clockwise") - looked on from above. One mounts a real horse by lifting one's right leg over the animal's back as it stands with its head towards one's left (the horse's left side is called its "near" side). Likewise for a carousel that turns anti-clockwise: one stands on the near side of the horse to mount (towards the center of the carousel, not on its outer edge). One possible reason for carousels in the USA turning anti-clockwise may be so that the rider can use their right hand to catch a brass ring.

PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS TREE DISEASE THAT IS HITTING OUR FORESTS. The following is a notice from the Forestry Comission about the Rally GB - but applies all over Britain
all about animals
Forestry Commission Wales welcomes you to Wales Rally GB.

We hope you enjoy your visit to our woodlands, but that you will also take time to read and follow the precautions below to support our efforts to contain the spread of a fatal tree disease.

Phytophthora ramorum - a fatal disease affecting our woodlands

A fungus-like organism known as Phytophthora ramorum has killed larch trees in some of the woodlands through which the rally will pass.

It is harmless to people and animals but kills many kinds of trees and shrubs in gardens and the countryside.

The microscopic seeds, known as spores, that cause this disease are spread by rain, wind and rivers and by the movement of contaminated soil, plant debris or foliage stuck to vehicles, clothing and footwear.

We can't do much about the weather but we must do all we can to reduce the risk of carrying the spores between woodlands in Wales or further afield.

How you can help

These simple precautions will reduce the risk of taking this disease home with you.

Vehicles
After the rally: remove as much mud as possible from your vehicle before leaving the site.
At home: wash your vehicle thoroughly, preferably in a car wash on your way home or when you get there.
Clothing
At the rally: wear smooth-textured waterproofs, if you have them with you, as these clothes are easiest to wipe clean.
After the rally: shake or brush any needles and debris from clothing before leaving the site. Check hoods, pockets and collars for any trapped needles.
At home: launder clothing before wearing it in your garden or another woodland.

Footwear
At the rally: wear wellington boots, if you have them with you, because their surfaces are easier to clean than other materials.
After the rally: remove any loose plant debris from footwear before leaving the site.
At home: clean all soil, needles and plant debris from footwear before wearing them again.

Thank you for helping us protect Britain's woodlands from this serious disease.

THIS APPLIES ALL OVER IN ALL OUR FORESTS. WE MUST PROTECT THEM THEM. PLEASE PASS THE WORD
