Pits & Perception
Artist & Best Friends Animal Sanctuary founder, Cyrus Mejia's show Pits & Perception opened in Los Angeles @ Artology 101 in Glendale. There were several live pit bulls in attendance at the festivities.
From cyrusmejia.com/art/pits-and-perception
"Art can present us with a different view, a new perspective, another way of thinking about things. In this series of paintings of Pit Bulls I’m challenging the current-day perception of these dogs. Not by changing their image, but by depicting them close-up, larger than life, and inviting the viewer to question how they see and perceive Pit Bulls."

Because when you need a friend ...
He'll always have your back ...
And I've been loved and I've been used
Cut wide open, scarred and bruised
I'm unbreakable ...
Flesh, it heals I know
Hearts, they never mend
Lovers come and go
Right now I need a friend ...

Libelloides coccajus
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(En) "Owlflies are dragonfly-like insects with large bulging eyes and long knobbed antennae. They are not true flies, but rather neuropterans in the family Ascalaphidae, and as such are not closely related to the true flies at all; to the dragonflies and damselflies, they are even more distantly related.
Owlflies are readily distinguished from dragonflies because the latter have short bristle-like antennae. The closely related ant-lions, family Myrmeleontidae, have short, clubbed antennae, smaller eyes, and very different wing venation[1]. The sole living member of the subfamily Albardiinae, the Brazilian Albardia furcata, also has short, clubbed antennae, but its typical reticulate ascalaphid wing venation demonstrates its actual relationships."

Whales Hervery Bay _0312
* Average Length: (Adult) 35-50 ft (Newborn) 13-16 ft
* Average Weight: (Adult) 23-30 tons (Birth) 1-2 tons
* Population: 18,000-20,000 (2002 figure)
* Lifespan: estimated to be around 40 years (1998 figure)
* Threats: Caught in fishing nets, human disturbance, and being tangled in marine pollution
* The flukes (tails) have a distinct pattern on the underside, much like our fingerprints
* The humpback whale breaches more frequently than other baleen whales
* The Pacific humpback's pectoral fins are white underneath & black on top..
* The Atlantic humpback's pectoral fins are white on both sides- which makes it easier for us to see them
* While in their breeding grounds- the whales do NOT eat!
* Some humpbacks feed in the Southern Ocean and go north to their reproductive areas!
* Can stay underwater for 30 minutes but often dives for much shorter periods of time, usually 5 to 10 minutes
* Humpbacks emit high frequency "clicks" reaching 30,000 Hz
* The males produce, in frequencies between 20 and 9,000 Hz, songs that are the longest and the most varied in all the animal kingdom, with repeated sequences about 15 minutes long
* When they are in cold waters, the humpback whale eats 2 tons of fish and planktonic crustaceans a day, in 2 to 4 meals

Killer
For Michelle and Gabi, I promised you a photo from the new camera and a photo of the cat, respectively. :)
This is the beautiful calico who rules our home, Killer. She's afflicted with feline ADD, as she's hyperactive, needy and destructive, all the while being sickeningly cute. Rumor has it she's is telepathically controlled by an insane German woman as right before I took this photo, she found the camera sitting on my bed, put the strap in her mouth and took off at 90 miles an hour. Wench.
I'm very impressed with my new camera, for the quality of the photo, especially as I was using the flash from about two feet away from her. With my compact, she would be a washed out glare due to her whiteness. I guess there's something to be said for raw as well as the original photo is spectacularly detailed.

On 20 Jan, near the Oso Bay Turnaround in Flour Bluff, I came across a few Turkey Vultures eating something, which turned out to be a sea turtle of some type. I'm uploading these for the Turtle Lab at Padre Island National Seashore. -- Many of these were taken with a spotting scope that I had just obtained and was still learning how to use, so they've been sharpened significantly in post-processing.

Happy Tails: Lucy

Hi, my name is Lauren. My fiance Jake and I adopted a kitten from the Greece Ridge Mall location about a month ago. The lady who was working there told us that they love having pictures sent to them of the kitties to see how they're doing. She was so nice and helpful and I wanted to send them pictures.
This is Lucy (formally known as Aria), now almost four months old. She's a little furball of energy and is getting along very well with our other cat. They have become best friends and cuddle buddies.

I like to get shots of spiders in my hand. This one did not like my hand.
Whenever I scooped him up and dumped him in my palm, he would immediately jump off. If I dumped him on the counter, he did not have the same reaction. I guess the other explanation is that he really liked my kitchen counter.
