This bird has fine taste!

I spent a LOT of time in the lorikeet aviary the last time I went to the zoo. It was mostly due to the fact the birds were flocking to me, and I really didn't want to leave with three Australian parrots hanging on to me.

The carvings on this bowl represent creatures which were traditionally believed to have been used by witches to make their magic potions: lizards, snails, toads and snakes, all animals which feature in traditional medicine. The bowl is turned to resemble a large drinking cup, similar to a type which was popular in the 17th century and was probably used by a doctor or apothecary rather than a wise woman or 'witch' as she would not have wanted to draw attention to herself for fear of persecution and death.

The Yellow Brick Road at Universal Studios Japan

With my friend Paul, I spend five days in Osaka, Japan. The trip provided much refreshment, and excitement, not to mention many challenges. It was my first visit to the country, and, I feel, it certainly won't be my last, as there are still many places left to see, and so many new things to learn.

We had several destinations highlighted on our itinerary, the foremost of which was Universal Studios. We spend an entire day there, going on rides and more often than not, queuing for them. The excruciating wait times were worth it, however, for such exhilarating fun, especially on the Hollywood Roller Coaster, my personal favorite. The next morning we followed up that successful endeavor with a trip to the Himeji Castle, a place which came highly recommended by my colleague, whose succinct description of the heritage site was, "awesome." Indeed, as a history buff, I enjoyed walking the storied grounds and climbing through the maze-like interior of the keep which was designed not so much to comfortably house the royal family as to confound the invading enemy. The castle is a must-visit. Other attractions of note include the Osaka Aquarium, and the Tennoji Zoo; both teemed with animals of every shape and size. We also at length ventured into several shopping districts inside of which were myriad stores, selling all sorts of fashion and gadgetry, countless restaurants and several gambling parlors - the Japanese, it seems, love their slot machines as much as the Hong Kong Chinese love their horse racing. Lest I forget, we frequented several video arcades to play the latest and greatest games; Paul played well, while I more often than not got 0wn3d. There is a lot to do in Japan.

Japanese culture, of which I've heard so much, really is distinct and separate from other Asian cultures. Their patterns of action and their peculiar artifacts certainly aren't the same as those which feature prominently in Hong Kong. For one thing, the MTR culture was more civilized and less stressful: people queued up for trains and let passengers alight first before permitting themselves to board; cellphones never rang and cabin cars were as quiet as bedrooms at midnight; and to imagine all of these people enforce their norms without public service announcements, without any coddling, conspicuous signs - that's amazing. What proved difficult was trying to find a garbage can. It was easier to find a vending machine, from which one could purchase a variety of drinks or cigarettes, than a bin in which to dispose of these delectable, perishable goods.

As for the general citizenry, they were most accommodating and hospitable, with several individuals going out of their way to help Paul and I find our way around the dense sprawl of the city. Language wasn't a concern despite our limited Japanese; amazingly enough, our comfort was their concern! I won't forget their selfless service, as one day, I hope, I'll be able to return the favor. That the girls were quite attractive and that I demonstrated a propensity to ask attractive girls for directions go without saying; however, I understand now that their sexiness and sophistication stem not from comely faces but coherent attire. Rather than adorn themselves like a typical Mong Kok girl in a ridiculous neon rainbow palette, with jeans or unseemly spandex underneath dresses, skirts or other tops better left to stand alone, Japanese girls opt for more somber, sensible colors - black and cream-colored - and what's more, they aren't afraid to whip out the tasteful pantyhose or to show some skin, even. We had plenty of time to ogle the ladies, and to their credit, freezing temperatures weren't enough to dissuade many of them from forsaking, icing their shorts, as we saw countless pairs being worn on the street. That's what I call fashion professionalism!

Overall, Japan is a marvelous little land full of the eccentric, as well as the endearing. It was a fascinating place to explore, and I'm thankful that it was done in the company of my friend , with whom candor was not at a premium. We both learned a lot and look forward to the next trip!

Kuwait Zoo
animal movie
I woke up around 12:30PM today and didn't have that much to do since I already watched most of the movies I had over the weekend. So, me and my wife decided to go to the Kuwait Zoo. It was our second time there in recent months, the last time we got there just before they were closing so we had like 30 minutes to quickly see everything. Today though we were there earlier and had all the time we wanted to really check out the place. We got there and found the parking lot full, many people had a day off today and the sun was out so the zoo had more traffic then usual. Entrance was 500fils per person which compared to the prices in the states is ridiculously cheap. The zoo has many problems though here in Kuwait, the main one being that its really unorganized and unpractical to walk through. When you first get in you have three different directions you can go. When you choose a direction (we chose right) the road then also divides in another 3 directions! This basically means there isn't one road that will take you through the whole park. You have to do a lot of back tracking and weaving across the whole zoo trying to see everything and making sure when you chose your route you didn't miss out on some animals. The animal cages are also tiny. There were around 4 large lions in a cage the size of my bedroom! Its very sad actually going to the zoo. You wonder how the animals can survive in a place like this. And it all really doesn't make sense. How come the leopard is all alone in a giant area with sand, water, hills and a tree, yet 4 lions are stuck in a small, tiny concrete cage!? Another issue is the proximity of the animals to the people. There really isn't that much separating the two and in some places all that separates you from the animals is a single ordinary fence. I saw one man pulling on an ostrich's feathers trying to pull them out to give to his son as a souvenir! Where are the animal caretakers and the security? We were at the monkeys cage and there was a large sign that said do not feed the animals stuck on the cage, yet there were a couple of kids with their parents throwing peanuts, chips and fruits at the monkeys. We later saw one animal eating a plastic bag which one of the kids had thrown in. The alligator's cage is unbelievable. I swear I could reach out and touch them because they were so close. Its really dangerous and then you see a stupid woman take her kid and carry them over and put them down on the fence so that the kid is now sitting just a meter away from a sleeping alligator. Also the way the animals are organized next to each other, its like, African Lions, Leopord, Tiger, Hippopotamus. Hippopotamus? Why are they next to the dangerous carnivores? Shouldn't they be with the other "friendly" animals? Oh and Pony is STILL spelt Bony at the zoo. Urgh.. it all pisses me off! The zoo has a lot of potential in becoming a wonderful place but the tiny cages, the maze like passageways and the way the people abuse the animals just makes the place very sad. I took a whole bunch of quick pictures at the zoo you can check them out by clicking here.

Seminole Canyon State Park, Val Verde County, Texas. One of the more remote state parks, tucked into the southwest corner of Texas about an hour's drive west of Del Rio.

This area has been inhabited since the very earliest days that humans set foot in North America, going back nearly 12,000 years - back during the last Ice Age when the land was more verdant with now-extinct animals still roaming the surrounding prairies and forest. But over the millenia, the climate changed to its current, arid desert landscape - and the Indians adapted.

All through these years, the local Indians drew pictograms all over the surrounding canyon walls and caves. In the dry climate, protected by overhanging rock walls, many of these pictograms survived through the ages. Some of the more famous sites, such as the Fate Bell and Panther Cave, are the feature attractions of Seminole Canyon, and can be visited by guided tour through the park.

However, I have not yet visited these sites - instead focusing on other areas of the park. On the first visit (March 9th, 2008), I arrived after the park had closed for the day. I walked along the short 'Windmill Trail', a small loop near the visitor's center. This trail leads down to a small year-round spring and the ruins of a water catchment system that was used by local settlers over the past hundred years.

The return trip (September 27, 2008) was much more fruitful - I chose to hike the Rio Grande River Trail, a six-mile out-and-back loop that leads to the far corner of the park, almost a stone's throw from Old Mexico. With recent rains it was fairly lively and green, with countless butterflies passing through on their annual migration. The trail starts alongside the original 'Loop Trail', the 1882 railroad alignment that was abandoned a decade later when a less strenuous route was forged and the Pecos River High Bridge was built.

The trail itself is pretty boring - a flat, featureless hike across a nondescript desert plain. But the main highlight of the hike quickly comes into view. There is a mile-long spur shooting off to the left called the Pressa Trail, which leads to an overlook looking down at a three-way intersection in the Seminole Canyon below. Here, the waters from Lake Amistad many miles away along the Rio Grande peter out; to the right, the waters are wide and deep, muddied from the recent rainstorms. To the left, the two forks of Seminole Canyon are mostly dry. From the top of the overlook, sheer cliffs lead staight down over a hundred feet to the waters below. The view is, well, *breathtaking* - and worth the trip.

Back on the main trail, a few miles later it comes to an abrupt end at the junction where Seminole Canyon merges with the Rio Grande. The location overlooks the Panther Cave pictograms, on the opposite shore far below, accessible only by boat. To the right, a few hundred yards away, are the hills of Mexico. Here, the water is deeper, the canyons steeper, the chasm wider. An impressive view, although not as amazing as the Pressa Trail overlook.

From here, it is a straight hike back along the south portion of the loop, my only companion a great horned toad trying to hide in the gravel of the trail. I would like to return to this park to take the guided tours, and there are other tours available nearby on private land to other pictogram sites as well. And I am told this park is also fabulous for bird watchers as well.

Save the Girlfriend
animal behavior
I've posted Wolfgang's "girlfriend" before. It's a long, stuffed toy with a squeaker. I've noted how our miniature dachshund seems to recognize her face. He puts the face in his food bowl while he's eating. He props her up on the arm of his favorite chair in the right position so his girlfriend can "see" out the window. He does these things consistently.

Now, we think we've figured out something else. Wolfgang's not just barking randomly at the mop and broom over in the corner. Our tiny dog will place his girlfriend on the floor, near those giants. Then, he'll nudge the mop or the broom with his nose and act startled when it moves. And, in a moment or two, he will snatch his girlfriend from the area, barking at the looming monsters.

If Wolfgang feeds his friend consistently, and helps her to see out the window, then could he also pretend to rescue her?

I thought I'd do an Illo Friday piece for Drawing Day 2010, which is officially today, and dedicate it to an old friend. A few years ago while walking the W&OD Trail in Leesburg, VA, I saw an injured box turtle. He stood there at the side of the trail looking at me with one open eye, the other severly damaged. As speedy bikers whizzed on by oblivious to this small creature, I wondered what to do. A friend suggested I take it to the local animal hospital, which I ended up doing. They performed surgery on his eye, which he was now blind in. I wondered what had happened to the turtle, whose habitat was being rapidly destroyed and replaced by apartment buildings, shopping centers and storage spaces. I named him Rocky because he was a true fighter and his bloodied eye reminded me of Stallone in the first Rocky film. My wife wanted to keep him but I knew he wouldn't thrive in captivity, so after a week of care I released him into an area not far from where he was found, yet deep enough in the woods where he hopefully was protected. I hope Rocky's doing well today.

He has arrived. I'm exhausted and it's very late, so I'll write more about this tomorrow.

It's tomorrow. :)

This is my seizure response dog, courtesy of the very good folks at Paws With A Cause, who obtain and train these extraordinary animals for people with disabilities of all types. I don't generally solicit anything for anyone here on Flickr, but if you are feeling generous and want a tax write off, I can assure you, through my still very new experience and those of other people I know, that this is a very useful, worthy cause. Better than half the dogs are rescued animals, and if they are not suitable as working dogs are found homes in other ways.

His name is Rufus. The foster families have the pleasure of ascribing a moniker, and we recipients are stuck with them. :). He's a two year old Golden Retriever with a golden - red coat, silky and clean. He's eager and smart, and I am running to catch up. He is already trained, I now need to be trained to him. It may take as long as six months before I am certified, but the work ahead will be well worth it.

So we begin. :)

Rufus, by dint of his training, follows me everywhere I go. Not just in public, but at home as well, even though he is out of his working jacket and for all intents and purposes "off-duty". He is so well trained and dedicated to me that he remains alert and watchful over me no matter where in the house I may be.

This is very useful ,as I am home a lot and have a good many seizures here. Rufus leaps to do his job and brings me around no matter where in the house I may be, no matter the hour, whether he is awake or asleep.

So, he followed me into the bathroom one day as I was getting ready to go out and I saw the lines of strong sunlight filtering through the blinds and spreading across his luscious golden-red fur, and ran for the camera.

Obliging as always of his humans' quirks and absurdities, he consented to lay in the patches and pools of light and let me snap away to my heart's content. I don't know if the pictures are any good, but he looks smashing in them, in my utterly biased opinion. :)

Last Column

Suspended Animation Classic #1,051
First published February 8, 2009 (#6) (Dates are approximate)

Today is a day of good news.
Hurrah!
This is my last column for Suspended Animation.
Why is that good news?
In February of 1989, I wrote: “The truth, however, is that there are comics for adults, and they are capable of looking profoundly into the human condition”, and Suspended Animation was born. In that column, I wanted to introduce adults to the idea that there were comics titles they could enjoy. I believe I accomplished that.
I also wrote: “The purpose of this new weekly column is to review the best and worst in comics. We will review comics written and drawn solely to entertain as well as comics with political, religious, and philosophical slants”. For twenty years, I expressed my opinion on what was the best and worst in comics. Job done.
In fact, at the height of its popularity, Suspended Animation was published in dozens of newspapers and magazines, broadcast on radio, featured on more than one hundred websites, and read by four million folks interested in comics. It is the longest running comics review column in history.
There is more good news.
Although sales have steadily fallen throughout the past two decades, and I suspect that monthly titles will cease to be published in my lifetime (if I live another twenty years), those who wish to read them will enjoy comic books and strips for many years to come.
Why?
Because collecting comic books and strips has become a hobby, millions and copies and thousands of titles remain in collections all over the world. They will continue to be available to buy, sell, and trade long after new comic books and strips are published.
Hardcore fans will continue to produce fanzines about comic books and strips. It is now more affordable to publish than in the past.
Did you notice the operative word is “continue”.
Suspended Animation will be continued by Mark Allen.
I thank my readers for allowing me to write about comics.
Goodbye and God bless.
Continually yours,
Michael Vance
