Bat Infestation and Remediation - Third Lake, IL - 25 August 2011
Our attic has a bat infestation. After some research, we signed a contract about 3-1/2 weeks ago with Illinois Wildlife Services, Inc. The contractor waited until today to perform any work since he wanted to make sure that any offspring would be old enough to fly. The work consisted of securing fascia boards in various areas around the house to close any gaps, followed by limiting the entrance / exit to the attic via a single 'excluder'.
The screening is designed to funnel down to a steep-angled PVC pipe stub. The idea is that when the bats fly out after dark thru the only exit (the excluder), they will not be able to return to the nest via the slippery pipe. It was thus important that any offspring could fly, since milk-bearing parents would not be able to return to the nest.
During the installation, the contractor sprayed some nuisance wasps in the area, which caused 8-10 bats to fly out of a breech in the screening inside the louver. Following this early exodus, the exterior screening / excluder was installed. The excluder will be removed in approximately 10 days.
What is identified as 'Bat' was a small mass that definitely moved between successive camera shots. The contractor suggested that the bats should be gone within the first 24 hours.

Went to the shelter today to check out the dogs. We are thinking about adding another one to the family.

The animal, not the Chevrolet, seen yesterday at the San Diego Zoo. One of the things that I really appreciate about the new lens is the look of the out of focus background (bokeh). Other pictures taken over the years at our local zoo can be seen here. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157621078764843/...
