A old picture from my visit in Bergen this last spring. The place I stayed had a group of sheep right outside and every time you where going somewhere you had to walk through them. They where quite tame and came running towards you usually, thinking they would get some goodies...and sometimes they did ;-)

As usual, push L to get the best view =)

Random visit
Note that the covers over those stands were red, so I got lots of pics with "red light".

Lots of food in the Amazon's basin, of all types.
Although selling turtles and their eggs is legal, most species are quite threatened, and their “harvest” is regulated, but authorities are not able to "enforce" regulations...hence lots come from areas supposed to be protected....not sustainable.
Turtle eggs are (not only in Peru, but in many parts of the world) supposed to have lots of medicinal properties (against bronchitis...as a natural equivalent of viagra...against aid....), so although they are more expensive than chicken once (quite equivalent in nutrient content), in addition of being "a delicacy"...there is demand.

"Culture" I've just discovered that "Wang Ba Dan"..."turtle egg" in Mandarin...is an insult (kind of son of a b..)

White-handed Gibbons
animals names
The White-handed gibbon (Scientific Name: PONGIDAE HYLOBATES Lar), like the gorilla, chimpanzee and orangutan, is an ape, not a monkey. The chief characteristics distinguishing apes from monkeys are the absence of a tail, their more or less upright posture and the high development of their brain. The White-handed gibbon (also know as the Lar gibbon) has a black to pale brown or yellowish-gray fur body, with white hair framing a black naked face. The palms of the hand and soles of the feet are also free of fur and white in color, hence its name. The animal's long arms and grasping hands with thumb, contribute to its ability to swing through the trees.

Lithops are extremely succulent plants originating from the semi-deserts of southern Africa. Their plant body rests under ground, while on top they have transparent windows to let sunlight in for photosynthesis. A camouflage pattern on the windows lets them appear more or less like a pair of pebblestones, so hungry animals may hardly find them. I like them because they look like ornamented knobs or gemstones.

The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012

Some cool facts about animals images:

The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012
facts about animals

Potions Classroom
Hidden deep in Hogwarts dungeons is the Potions Classroom, a room lined with dusty shelves full of peculiar jars and bottles which was the haven of Professors Snape and Slughorn.
For Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone the classroom was actually shot on-location at Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire, England. For subsequent films a version of the set was built here at Leavesden with some additional magic touches. More than five hundred bottles line the walls of the classroom, many with their own handcrafted labels.

Self-Stiring Cauldron
To add a bit more wizardry to the classroom, John Richardson's Special Effects team designed this cauldron that mechanically stirs itself.

Gilded Archways
These brass-leafed archways contain cryptic Latin and English inscriptions of potions ingredients and rare minerals, all selected from ancient alchemy recipes.

Giner Roots and Salamanders
Among the ingredients kept on the classroom shelves are plastic animals from Regent's Park Zoo gift shop, baked animal bones from a local butcher shop and dried leaves & herbs.

A Magical Transformation
Portions of this room were constructed for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone but since then this room has gone through several changes.
The room was first seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as the small closet where Fluffy the three-headed dog guarded the trap door leading to the Philosopher's Stone.
For Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the production team revamped the space to create Professor Snape's office.
In 2008 the set was redressed again for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, as the potions classroom and the entire room was made larger.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

Tiger spider with lunch
names for animals
The common name of this beautiful spider is Wasp Spider. This spider is, like all orb-weavers, not poisonous for us. The adult female has a shining silvery cephalothorax (head) and a yellowish abdomen with black and white bars across it.

The adult female is much larger than the male. The male measures between 4 and 6 mm while the female has a full grown size between 14 - 17 mm.
When the female is loaded with eggs she can become enormous in size.
Argiopes can be easily identified by the zigzag of white silk in their webs. Like all orb-weavers, they have ringed legs.
The function of the zigzag of white silk in their web is not clear. There are several ideas what the purpose may be.

It may be used to attract insects because it is radiating UV-light and that attract insects. Another explanation is that it is to frighten predators. The spider shakes the web vigorously when something large is approaching and that result in a blurry white spot.
Another explanation can be that the spider makes the web clear to see and that should avoid large animals to destroy the web.

Happy Tails: Joselle
names for animals
I wanted to give you an update on Joselle (a 2-year-old Harlequin -- she was named Honey when I meet her). I met Joselle at the PetSmart in Henrietta and adopted her Sept 3rd. It was love at first sight. I had to bring her home to meet my other bunny (at that time), a 3-month-old Lionhead named Diamant (German for Diamond). I had read that bunnies do better when they have a bunny partner to hang with...so Joselle was coming home to be a big sister to Dia.

Joselle is an absolute joy. It didn't take her long to come out of her shell, after being given up. Before we knew it, Joselle was running through the house and doing binkies 2 feet in the air. Her favorite thing is having her forehead pet. She is a treasure that I am so glad I found.

Image by Animals Abused & Abandoned
Jasper was rescued from the streets of Dallas with another dog and brought to the shelter. His companion was adopted a long time ago. He still hopes that someone will come any day to take him home. He is a yellow Lab mix, about four to five years old who enjoys the company of people and is a wonderful friend. When you enter his kennel, he cuddles up to you, just hoping for a little stroke on the head. He is a quiet dog and very people-oriented. Cactus Forest Drive, Saguaro National Park 36

Some cool about endangered animals images:

Cactus Forest Drive, Saguaro National Park 36
about endangered animals
Enormous cacti, silhouetted by the setting sun, for most of us the Giant Saguaro is the universal symbol of the American West. And yet, these majestic plants are only found in a small portion of the United States. Saguaro National Park protects some of the most impressive forests of these sub-tropical giants, on the edge of the modern City of Tucson.

Saguaro National Park, located in the state of Arizona, is part of the United States national park system.

Saguaro National Park is divided into two sections, lying approximately 20 miles (32 km) east and 15 miles (24 km) west of the center of the city of Tucson, Arizona. Total area in 2002 was 143 square miles (91,327 acres) (370 km²) of which 111 square miles (289 km²) is designated wilderness. There is a visitor center in each section. Both are easily reached by car from Tucson, but there is no public transport into either section. Both sections conserve fine tracts of the Sonoran Desert, including ranges of significant hills, the Tucson Mountains in the west and the Rincon Mountains in the east. The park gets its name from the saguaro cactus which is native to the region. Many other kinds of cactus, including barrel cactus, cholla cactus, and prickly pear, are also abundant in the park. One endangered animal, the Lesser Long-nosed Bat, lives in the park part of the year during its migration, together with one threatened species, the Mexican Spotted Owl.

The park was established as Saguaro National Monument on March 1, 1933, and changed to a national park on October 14, 1994.

Facilities in the park include 150 miles (240 km) of well marked and maintained hiking trails, and shorter walking trails with interpretative information available. Hiking is not advisable during the hot summer months.

The Rincon Mountain District is located at the eastern edge of Tucson, Arizona; the east side of the park was the original National Monument. What is unique about this park is that it starts off in the Sonoran Desert and gradually gives way to a montane coniferous forest of the Rincon Mountains. The highest peak in this range is Mica Mountain, at an elevation of 8,666 feet (2641 m). While this side of the park has fewer Saguaros than its counterpart they remain larger in size, due to higher amounts of rainfall and run off from the Rincon Mountains.

The key feature of this district is its 8.3-mile (13.4 km) loop, which connects its two picnic areas and central trails. Recently after a lengthy road improvement project, and refurbishment of the Visitor Center, the Rincon District is fully open once more.

Hiking on this side of the park is readily accessible to visitors. There are trail heads present at the east end of Speedway and Broadway, but these trail heads are commonly used by horses and get heavy usage on the weekends. Off the park's loop road there are several additional trail heads. Each Visitor Center will supply a map of hiking trails on request.

And at the southern boundary of the park is the Hope Camp Trails which are also commonly used for horses. Access to the Hope Camp Trails is found at the end of Camino Loma Alta, however the road is no longer paved for the last couple hundred yards. This section of the park was added in 1991 when Congress authroized the purchase of 4,011 acres (16.23 km2).

Abstract
Phyllanthus amarus derived preparations were previously shown to inhibit RT inhibitor-resistant HIV variants as efficiently as wild-type strains. The drugs target different steps of the HIV life cycle, thereby presenting multiple antiviral activities. Here we show that a water/alcohol extract blocks HIV-1 attachment and the HIV-1 enzymes integrase, reverse transcriptase and protease to different degrees. A gallotannin containing fraction and the isolated ellagitannins geraniin and corilagin were shown to be the most potent mediators of these antiviral activities. The P. amarus derived preparations blocked the interaction of HIV-1 gp120 with its primary cellular receptor CD4 at 50% inhibitory concentrations of 2.65 (water/alcohol extract) to 0.48 microg/ml (geraniin). Inhibition was also evident for the HIV-1 enzymes integrase (0.48-0.16 microg/ml), reverse transcriptase (8.17-2.53 microg/ml) and protease (21.80-6.28 microg/ml). In order to prove the in vivo relevance of these biological activities, plant material was administered orally to volunteers and a potent anti-HIV activity in blood could be demonstrated. Sera at a final concentration of 5% reduced HIV replication by more than 30%. These results support the conclusion that P. amarus has inhibitory effects on HIV not only in vitro but also in vivo.

Abstract
In spite of considerable efforts to identify effective treatments for urolithiasis, this is a goal yet to be achieved. This review summarizes experimental and clinical data evaluating the effect of the plant Phyllanthus niruri, a plant with worldwide distribution, as a potential agent to prevent and/or to treat urolithiasis The review is based on data from the literature and on the results obtained by our group from either in vivo/in vitro experiments or clinical studies. Phyllanthus niruri has been shown to interfere with many stages of stone formation, reducing crystals aggregation, modifying their structure and composition as well as altering the interaction of the crystals with tubular cells leading to reduced subsequent endocytosis. The clinical beneficial effects of Phyllanthus niruri may be related to ureteral relaxation, helping to eliminate calculi or to clear fragments following lithotripsy, or also to a putative reduction of the excretion of urinary crystallization promoters such as calcium. No adverse renal, cardiovascular, neurological or toxic effects have been detected in either of these studies. Altogether, these studies suggest a preventive effect of Phyllanthus niruri in stone formation or elimination, but still longer-term randomized clinical trials are necessary to confirm its therapeutic properties.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE:
Phyllanthus niruri Linn. (Euphorbiaceae) is used as folk medicine in South America to treat excess uric acid. Our initial study showed that the methanol extract of Phyllanthus niruri and its lignans were able to reverse the plasma uric acid of hyperuricemic animals.
AIM OF THE STUDY:
The study was undertaken to investigate the mechanisms of antihyperuricemic effect of Phyllanthus niruri and its lignan constituents.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
The mechanisms were investigated using xanthine oxidase assay and uricosuric studies in potassium oxonate- and uric acid-induced hyperuricemic rats.
RESULTS:
Phyllanthus niruri methanol extract exhibited in vitro xanthine oxidase inhibition with an IC50 of 39.39 microg/mL and a moderate in vivo xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. However, the lignans display poor xanthine oxidase inhibition in vitro and a relatively weak in vivo inhibitory activity at 10mg/kg. On the other hand, intraperitoneal treatment with Phyllanthus niruri methanol extract showed 1.69 folds increase in urinary uric acid excretion when compared to the hyperuricemic control animals. Likewise, the lignans, phyllanthin, hypophyllanthin and phyltetralin exhibited up to 2.51 and 11.0 folds higher in urinary uric acid excretion and clearance, respectively. The co-administration of pyrazinamide with phyllanthin exhibited a significant suppression of phyllanthin's uricosuric activity resembling that of pyrazinamide with benzbromarone.
CONCLUSIONS:
The present study showed that the antihyperuricemic effect of Phyllanthus niruri methanol extract may be mainly due to its uricosuric action and partly through xanthine oxidase inhibition, whereas the antihyperuricemic effect of the lignans was attributed to their uricosuric action.

Abstract
Phyllanthus niruri L. (Euphorbiaceae) is acclaimed world-wide for its versatile ethnomedicinal uses. It features in recipes used by some herbalists to manage different diseases, including claims of efficacy against many life-threatening infections, such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. In order to understand the mechanisms and the involvement of the immune system in mediating these activities, the effects of the aqueous extract of P. niruri on the activation of murine lymphocytes and macrophages were investigated. The study showed that the extract of P. niruri is a potent murine lymphocytes mitogen, inducing significant (p < 0.01) increases in the expression of surface activation maker (CD69) and proliferation of B and T lymphocytes. The production of interferon-gamma (IFN- gamma) and interleukine-4 (IL-4) by P. niruri extract-stimulated naïve splenocytes cultures was also significantly (p < 0.05) increased in a concentration-dependent manner. Various indices of activation and functions murine bone marrow-derived macrophages were significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced by pre-treatment with the extract, including phagocytosis, lysosomal enzymes activity, and TNF-alpha release. Phyllanthus niruri extract was also shown to modulate nitric oxide release by macrophages. These activities suggest that stimulation of the immune system by the extracts of P. niruri could be partly responsible for the ethnomedicinal applications in the management of infectious diseases.

Pharmaceutical Division, Institute of Chemical Technology, University of Mumbai, Matunga, Mumbai-400019, India.
Abstract
Phyllanthus niruri has been found to exhibit marked inhibitory effect on hepatitis B virus evident by its exhaustive utility in cases of chronic jaundice. However, till date, research has not been focused on identification and validation of active pharmacophores of Phyllanthus niruri responsible for the reported inhibitory effect of its aqueous extract on anti-human immunodeficiency virus. The present investigation examines the anti-HIV effects of the alkaloidal extract of Phyllanthus niruri in human cell lines. The inhibitory effect on HIV replication was monitored in terms of inhibition of virus induced cytopathogenecity in MT-4 cells. The alkaloidal extract of Phyllanthus niruri showed suppressing activity on strains of HIV-1 cells cultured on MT-4 cell lines. The CC50 for the extract was found to be 279.85 microgmL(-1) whereas the EC50 was found to be 20.98 microgmL(-1). Interestingly the Selectivity Index (SI) was found to be 13.34, which showed a clear selective toxicity of the extract for the viral cells. The alkaloidal extract of Phyllanthus niruri was thus found to exhibit sensitive inhibitory response on cytopathic effects induced by both the strains of human immunodeficiency virus on human MT-4 cells in the tested concentrations.

The annual herb Phyllanthus niruri is best known by the common names Stonebreaker(Eng.), Chanca Piedra(Sp.) and Quebra Pedra(Port.), Seed-Under-Leaf(Eng.) but has many other common names in assorted languages, including dukong anak, dukong-dukong anak, amin buah, rami buah, turi hutan, bhuiaonla, Meniran (Indonesia), കീഴാനെല്ലി (Malayalam) and கீழாநெல்லி / Keela Nelli (Tamil). The herb is known as Nela Nelli in Kannada and "Nela Usiri" in Telugu. It is a widespread tropical plant commonly found in coastal areas. It is a relative of the spurges, belonging to the leafflower genus of Family Phyllanthaceae.

GROWTH
It grows 50 to 70 centimeters tall and bears ascending herbaceous branches. The bark is smooth and light green. It bears numerous pale green flowers which are often flushed with red. The fruits are tiny, smooth capsules containing seeds.

MEDICINAL USES :
Some of the medicinal properties suggested by preclinical trials are anti-hepatotoxicity,[1] anti-lithic, anti-hypertensive, anti-HIV and anti-hepatitis B.[2][3] However, human trials do not show efficacy against hepatitis B virus.[4]
P. amarus is an important plant of Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine which is used for stomach problems, and for the genitourinary system, liver, kidney and spleen.[5]The plant has long been used in Brazil and Peru as a supposed herbal remedy for kidney stones. Research among sufferers of kidney stones has shown that, while intake of Phyllanthus niruri didn't lead to a significant difference in either stone voiding or pain levels, it may reduce urinary calcium, a contributing factor to stone growth.[6] One study conducted on rats showed that an aqueous solution of Phyllanthus niruri may inhibit kidney stone growth and formation in animals who already have stones

Serpent mask, Bwa peoples, Burkina Faso, Early-mid 20th century, Wood, pigment, bitumen, hair, plant fiber

This spectacular wooden mask depicts a serpent, an animal associated in Bwa myths with positive, protective qualities. During masquerade performances, the serpent mask twists its head rapidly from side to side so that its long, flexible body appears to undulate--an effect reinforced by the irregular zigzag design of its towering superstructure. The mask usually appears along with other red, black and white painted animal masks that depict, among other creatures, the bush cow, owl, crocodile and butterfly. Harvest celebrations, funeral rites, initiation ceremonies and community events all provide occasions for public masquerades, which involve the entire community and include song and dance accompanied by flute and xylophone. To prevent insect damage to the masks, the Bwa generally soak the masks in nearby reservoirs and repaint them annually. This is done as part of male initiation rites, when novices learn about the many different meanings of the red, white and black geometric patterns that embellish the masks.
