Aspen, a dilute Chinese Shar Pei, was rescued from the pound. He was dumped there at five months of age with cherry eyes so large he could not see. After six surgeries for several eye issues, he has his complete vision.

Winston is a nine year old German Shorthaired Pointer we met on the ferry from Chrisfield, MD to Smith Island. He's a very sweet, 110 pound, dog.

The color of the coyote's pelt varies from grayish brown to yellowish gray on the upper parts, while the throat and belly tend to have a buff or white color. The forelegs, sides of the head, muzzle and paws are reddish brown. The back has tawny-colored underfur and long, black-tipped guard hairs that form a black dorsal stripe and a dark cross on the shoulder area. The black-tipped tail has a scent gland located on its dorsal base. Coyotes shed once a year, beginning in May with light hair loss, ending in July after heavy shedding. The ears are proportionately large in relation to the head, while the feet are relatively small in relation to the rest of the body. Certain experts have noted that the shape of a domestic dog's brain case is closer to the coyote's in shape than the wolf's. Mountain dwelling coyotes tend to be dark furred while desert coyotes tend to be more yellowish in color.
Coyotes typically grow up to 30–34 in (76–86 cm) in length, not counting a tail of 12–16 in (30–41 cm), stand about 23–26 in (58–66 cm) at the shoulder and, on average, weigh from 15–46 lb (6.8–21 kg) .[5][12] Northern coyotes are typically larger than southern subspecies, with the largest coyotes on record weighing 74¾ pounds (33.7 kg) and measuring over five feet in total length.
The coyote's dental formula is I 3/3, C 1/1, Pm 4/4, M usually 2/2, occasionally 3/3, 3/2, or 2/3 × 2 = 40, 42, or 44.[14] Normal spacing between the upper canine teeth is 1⅛–1⅜ inches (29–35 mm) and 1–1¼ inches (25–32 mm) between the lower canine teeth.
The upper frequency limit of hearing for coyotes is 80 KHz, compared to the 60 kHz of domestic dogs.[16] Compared to wolves, and similarly to domestic dogs, coyotes have a higher density of sweat glands on their paw pads. This trait, however, is absent in the large New England coyotes, which are thought to have some wolf ancestry.
During pursuit, a coyote may reach speeds up to 43 mph (69 km/h), and can jump a distance of over 13+1⁄8 ft (4.0 m).

"The removal of dust and refuse from the houses of the metropolis is a task which devolves on the officers of the various parishes. Although the duty of collecting dust is not always discharged to the satisfaction of householders, it must be admitted, when the gigantic nature of the work is taken into account, that there is very little ground for complaint. In the parish of Lambeth alone there are about 40,000 rateable houses. Each house is calculated to contribute on an average three loads of dust in the course of the year, so that the accumulated annual refuse of this section of London would form a mound of no mean proportions. In this parish matters are so arranged that a dust-cart is supposed to pass each door twice a week. The faithful observance of this and other rules depends jointly on the men themselves, and on the efficient supervision of foremen set over them. These foremen are in the pay of the vestry, while the men and carts are hired by the day from a contractor. The rubbish thus collected is carted away in part to "shoots" found by the vestry within the area of the parish, and in part to the Thames, where it is deposited in boats hired for its removal at one pound sterling per load."

Pet of the Week: Cosmo, 8958154

Cosmo is a male 3-year-old Beagle/Jack Russell terrier mix who was brought to Lollypop Farm because of personal problems his owner was having that made her unable to care for a dog.
Cosmo weighs about 20 pounds and has lots of energy! His favorite thing to do is play! He would love an active owner.
Cosmo would do best in a home without kids under 15. He needs to meet any dogs in the household before going home with an adopter to make sure they’ll be buddies.

If you’re a Beagle lover, we have a winner for you! Meet Mandy, a 2.5-year-old, who’s at Lollypop Farm because her previous owner no longer had time for her.
She’s 23 pounds of cuteness, punctuated with a big vocabulary. In her kennel, she’s busy making sure you know she’s there, once outside the chatter stops! Mandy does well on a leash; she’ll trot right along, keeping her nose constantly to the ground to check things out.
If you want to meet Mandy, bring your children, and any dogs who share your home, to meet her. Children over the age of 6 are recommended. Mandy is busy interviewing potential families, so don’t delay if you think she’s your girl!

Pet of the Week: Wanita, 13825045

Could this little girl be any cuter? Look at her big brown puppy eyes and those wonderful, pricked up ears! Wanita is a 1-year-old, 33 pound Pitt Bill mix. She was found as a stray and brought to Lollypop Farm in the hopes she will find a loving forever home.
Wanita is a bit on the shy side, but once she warms up to you, she’s a lover. Wantia and her adopter will have to enroll in training classes. She is eager to please and training classes will help build a solid relationship. You will receive a discount on your first course with Wanita.
A home with children over the age of 16 is recommended. Wanita needs to meet all family members, dogs included. Come out and meet this cutie with a curl in her tail…she’s looking for a family willing to give her the time and attention she deserves!

Grace is a 4-year-old female cat who is a staff favorite at Lollypop Farm!
At 17 pounds, Grace is a big girl! She also has a cute bob tail.
Grace loves being petted and is definitely a lap cat. She has a laid-back, sweet personality.
Grace has lived with other cats and children before and did well with everyone. She’d be a great addition to any family!

In 1898, three years after Nipper’s death, Francis painted a picture of Nipper listening intently to a wind-up Edison-Bell cylinder phonograph. On February 11, 1899, Francis filed an application for copyright of his picture “Dog Looking At and Listening to a Phonograph.” Thinking the Edison-Bell Company might find it useful, he presented it to James E. Hough who promptly said, “Dogs don’t listen to phonographs.” On May 31, 1899, Francis went to the Maiden Lane offices of The Gramophone Company with the intention of borrowing a brass horn to replace the original black horn on the painting. Manager, William Barry Owen suggested that if the artist replaced the entire machine with a Berliner disc gramophone, the Company would buy the painting. A modified form of the painting became the successful trademark of Victor and HMV records, HMV music stores, and RCA. The trademark itself was registered by Berliner on July 10, 1900. Alligators have an average of 75 teeth. Alligators are only native to the United States and China.
American alligators are found in the southeast United States: all of Florida and Louisiana, the southern parts of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, coastal South and North Carolina, Eastern Texas, the southeast corner of Oklahoma and the southern tip of Arkansas. According to the 2005 Scholastic Book of World Records, Louisiana is the state with the largest alligator population.[6] The majority of American alligators inhabit Florida and Louisiana, with over a million alligators in each state.

Bianca is a 5-year-old white cat who weighs 11.5 pounds. She has two different colored eyes, one blue and one yellow! This beautiful girl enjoys being petted and loves to have her fur coat brushed.
Bianca is a friendly, sweet girl who would love to be the only pet in the household. She would also prefer a home without young children because they make her nervous.

The best part of this picture, other than Baker's tux, is that my "date" here wasn't really my date. I have no idea where my real date, Mormon supermodel Amberlyn Jackson, was at this moment. So we just got the coolest girl in school to fill in.
By the way, I'm like 800 pounds heavier now. See what beer does to you, kids?
As an interesting follow-up, eight years later the blonde girl at the right end of the top row married the blonde guy that is second from the right.

This is a photo of Diana. She is a beagle mix who we brought with us to the Richmond Vegetarian Festival. From the minute she got there, Diana made it her mission to find a family.
Being about 30 pounds and small enough to carry around was an added plus for Diana.
She ultimately found a family who changed her name to Reagan.
The shelter always has plenty of dogs like Diana / Regan available. Come out and meet them!

Lola is a 6-year old Hound mix, who weighs 63 pounds. Her family no longer had time for her, so she was brought to Lollypop Farm to find a family who’s able to shower her with the attention she deserves.
Lola enjoys her walks and is good on a leash. She loves to be petted and thinks belly rubs are even better! Since she thrives on attention, Lola would prefer to be the only dog in the household.
A home with children over the age of 12 is recommended. This sweetheart is another gem that’s eligible for the Seniors-for-Seniors program, so approved adopters age 60 and older can take her home free of charge. Toby is a 4-year-old male cat who weighs nearly 16 pounds. He’s at Lollypop Farm for the second time, by no fault of his own. Originally, Toby came to Lollypop as a stray, and then he was adopted and returned because his owner’s landlord did not allow pets.
This special boy has both his front and back paws declawed. He loves to give kisses and have his chin rubbed, but he isn’t too fond of having his back end touched!

Bubba is my daughters cat. She was living in OK for a short time and she found him looking for food in the dumpster. She didn't think he weighed more than a pound. She took him in and fed him. A few weeks later when I flew out to help her move back to California Bubba didn't weigh very much. Now, over a year and he is probably close to a 20 pound cat. He was a lucky kitty.

Just look at that smile! Randy is a 9-year-old male beagle/retriever mix who was returned to Lollypop Farm because his owner could no longer afford to keep a dog. He weighs about 75 pounds.
If you see Randy in his kennel, you'll probably hear a lot of barking, but he quiets down when he's out and about. Randy loves to go for walks and does well on the leash. He is eligible for our Seniors-for-Seniors program, so adopters age 60 and older can take him home free of charge!
Randy needs to go to a home without children under 12, and he also needs to be the only dog in the home.

Chance is a super sweet, incredibly handsome 2-year-old Chow Chow/Shepherd mix. This 86 pound boy is eagerly waiting to greet you with a wagging tail and to shower you with love! He can’t wait to find his new forever home with a loving family.
Chance was brought to Lollypop Farm because his previous family was moving and couldn’t take him along. He would do best in a cat-free household and he would also prefer to be the only dog. Children over the age of 16 are recommended.
This boy needs you, and he will make sure you’re not sorry you gave him a second chance!

Penelope is a 1-year-old female domestic shorthair mix who weighs 10 pounds. This pretty kitty was brought to Lollypop Farm because her owner had too many pets to care for.
Penelope is an energetic little girl who is great company. But, once in a while she also likes a break in the action. She is looking forward to playing with a cat toy with you!
Penelope has been patiently waiting since September to find her new home…Do you have room in your heart and your home for Penelope?

baking homemade dog biscuits for a local dog show. I might have overdone them...made like about 18 dozen total. oops.
Rant ahead:
some of you know that i make frozen dog pops for the local gourmet popsicle store to sell and that all the proceeds benefit the animal shelter i volunteer at.
well, i found out today that someone who wanted to buy into the store had opened her own stores (not in the same town, closer to the coast) with the shop name being three letters off. she also walks into the original popsicle stores to copy flavors down and tells her chef to make them for her own stores. she has even tried to sneak into the kitchen where the popsicles are made.
i understand competitors. i understand businesses doing and making the same thing. but i don't understand all this copying and sneaking just to make a profit (she has plans to open branches all over nc and then be bought out by a large corporation and... i don't know, be rich.)
the final straw came when she put up her menu and guess what? it includes doggie pops, too. and I don't think the money is going to support local animal charities.

Beshu II is a 2-year-old female cat. She is quite petite, weighing just over 6 pounds. She has a gorgeous grey coat and is super friendly.
She loves to stay busy! First, she’ll check out what’s happening out the window. Next, she’ll see if any closets or cupboards need looking into. And then there are her naps – she can’t be late for those!
And, since June is Adopt-A-Cat Month at Lollypop Farm, Beshu II can become a member of your family for just ! Come meet this sweetie today!

Brodie is a 1-year-old male Cocker Spaniel who was brought to Lollypop Farm after being abandoned by his owner. He weighs about 25 pounds and has lots of energy!
Brodie needs to meet any dogs or children in the house before being adopted, just to make sure everyone will get along.
Cocker spaniels enjoy getting plenty of exercise, so Brodie would love someone to take him for lots of walks!
Brodie would make a wonderful companion.
