Animal Ark
Rand McNally, America’s most trusted source for maps, directions and travel content, has chosen Reno’s Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary over hundreds of other locations as a unique travel destination, awarding the Ark their prestigious “Best of the Road” designation.
The Animal Ark is a nonprofit organization north of Reno that houses animals that cannot be released back into the wild. Glass viewing areas offer visitors a window into nature as they see wildlife up close in natural habitat exhibits. Educational programming is scheduled for school age youngsters throughout the year and special events offer recreation education for all ages.

Her Royal Dillymonsterness

Dilly was in fine form when I visited. It's probably wrong that I heard her signature growl on my way up to the building and it made my heart sing.
Dilly lives in Niblet's in Benton's.
Basket o' Dot
Man, I love Miss Dot. She's starting to show her age. She hissed at me a few times, when I think she didn't hear me or smell me before I petted her. And she's not cleaning quite as well. But she is still putting the smack down on violence in the room. And at one point she followed me while I was cleaning to approve of the moving of all the things, which made me tear up a bit. And she's still excited by a good jingledy ball.
Miss Dot lives in Niblet's at Benton's.

Anne (Erin’s sponsored goat) said hello through the fence while we were standing in line.
Normally during a visit to the sanctuary you can interact with the animals one-on-one. But with 250 people there for ThanksLiving, the people and the animals were mostly kept separate to prevent the animals from getting overwhelmed and frightened, or overexcited and rambunctious.

Bolivian Lion House
"This 15,000 Square Foot building was designed and created to house 25 African Lions that were rescued from Bolivia. The Lions came from eight separate circuses after they failed to comply with a new Bolivian law that made it illegal to use animals in circus acts or displays. The 25 Lions were rescued from Bolivia in conjunction with Animal Defenders International, as well as Game Show Host Bob Barker. The Lions came to Colorado in February, so this unique building was created to help buffer them from the cold winter weather while they acclimated to their new home. The Lions came in eight different groups originally, and over time, were given the opportunity to socialize with each other. Over time, the 8 groups formed four distinct Prides. Each Pride now lives in 20 acre free-roaming habitats, but still has access to the building whenever they wish. Since the Bolivian rescue, the Sanctuary has also rescued three female African Lions from a tiny roadside zoo in Panama, and they too live in this complex." Wild Animal Sanctuary, September 1, 2012
African Lion Introduction Area
"The enclosure space below this observation deck is used as an introduction area for newly rescued African Lions so they can spend time getting familiar with the sights and sounds of their new home. There are two Prides of Lions that live in the larger surrounding habitat areas. Newly rescued Lions stay in the introduction area until such time they are adopted by the members of one of the Lion Prides. Once they have been accepted, they are released into the Pride's habitat to live as a cohesive family group. African Lions usually weigh 350-550 pounds and can live 23 years in captivity." Taken at the Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary. When I took this photo of two Squirrel Monkeys, that's what I imagined them doing at the time. By keeping a tight focus on them, I feel it better captured that.
