Ethiopian cargo service
service animal
On the way from Babile to Harar our minibus stoped to take aboard sheeps that somebody wanted to transport to Harar. They tied up sheeps' legs and loaded them onto roof one by one. There was just metal grid on the roof and all the way to Harar was bumpy. I asked those people if they care about condition of animals - 'coz they certainly broke some bones. It's ok, they told me, those animals are just for meat.

Later I saw such style of transportation again and again.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently received an “A” on a report card from the Center for Plain Language a non-profit group that monitors the Plain Writing Act of 2011. USDA was the only government agency that received an “A” for all documents, new and revised since the Plain Writing act became law, October 2011. The Plain Writing Committee wagered what grade USDA would receive and the losers of the wager were to donate 25 pounds of food each to the USDA Feds Feed Families food drive. The donation was displayed in the Departmental Management conference room in Washington, DC Monday, July 23, 2012. (L to R Terry Bish, Public Affairs Specialist, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Beth Gaston, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Jerry Mande, Deputy Under Secretary, Food Safety Inspection Service and Senior Official for Plain Writing, Suzanne Austin-Kashawlic, Employee Relations Specialist, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Oscar Gonzales, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Departmental Administration and Dr. Gregory Parham, Assistant Secretary for Departmental Administration (not pictured James Gore, Deputy Chief, Natural Resources Conservation Service). Douglas Gets Hugged
service animal
Animal Place's Douglas is still a baby, although this photo makes him look like a big boy! Douglas loves hugs. Even though he was horribly treated as a younger baby, he has not held it against people.

Douglas is a "by-product" of the dairy industry. Unwanted male dairy calves are discarded at auction where people buy them for < and raise them for backyard slaughter or veal. Douglas and four other calves faced that fate, but Santa Cruz County Animal Services rescued them all, after they were being starved nearly to death.
