Spiny orbweaver spider (Gasteracantha cancriformis). Found this along with my macro photography group while trudging along the paved trail at the entrance of Pasir Ris Park, Singapore. It caught the attention of a few in our group. Looks mighty harmful here with all those jutting spikes from its body.

These type of spiders have that distinct thorns or spikes jutting out of their abdomen. They do bite (good thing we did not really touch it or else we'll get a nasty ant-like potent bite) but their bites are generally harmless.

Visit to the Children's Garden at the Morton Arboretum in in Lisle, Illinois.

From Wikipedia:

"The Morton Arboretum, in Lisle, Illinois, covers 1,700 acres (6.9 Square kilometres) and is made up of gardens of various plant types and collections of trees from specific taxonomical and geographical areas. It includes native woodlands and a restored Illinois prairie. The Arboretum has over 4,100 different species of trees, shrubs and other woody plants from around the globe. In all, there are over 186,000 catalogued plants. The Arboretum has 16 miles (26 km) of hiking trails and nine miles (14 km) of roadways for driving/bicycling.

The Arboretum features a 4-acre (16,000 m2) interactive "Children's Garden" and a one-acre "Maze Garden." Other special landscaped areas include the Fragrance Garden, Ground Cover Garden and Hedge Garden. The Schulenberg Prairie is one of the largest restored prairies in the Chicago suburban area."

On 20 Jan, near the Oso Bay Turnaround in Flour Bluff, I came across a few Turkey Vultures eating something, which turned out to be a sea turtle of some type. I'm uploading these for the Turtle Lab at Padre Island National Seashore. -- Many of these were taken with a spotting scope that I had just obtained and was still learning how to use, so they've been sharpened significantly in post-processing.

The Sand Cat can be found in Arabia and Jordan. They are mostly nocturnal. Thick fur enables them to retain body moisture and they also have hair on the soles of their feet to protect them from hot ground.

They eat a variety of rodents, particularly gerbils, and also reptiles and occasionally hares and birds. They are also known to kill snakes, which they stun with rapid blows to the head before killing them with a neck bite.

Said to be the companion of the prophet Mohammed this means that they are not usually hunted. In some areas, however, they are taken both for sport and for the pet trade. Cats may also be taken by large birds of prey if they are out during the daytime. These are one of the few types of cat that are not threatened by habitat destruction.

They are classified Lower Risk.

This is my favorite type of street dog. It has the large head and body of a German Shepherd, with the short legs of a Wiener Dog or a Beagle. I would refer to this variety as a "Smooshed German Shepherd."

Note that the covers over those stands were red, so I got lots of pics with "red light".

Lots of food in the Amazon's basin, of all types.
Although selling turtles and their eggs is legal, most species are quite threatened, and their “harvest” is regulated, but authorities are not able to "enforce" regulations...hence lots come from areas supposed to be protected....not sustainable.
Turtle eggs are (not only in Peru, but in many parts of the world) supposed to have lots of medicinal properties (against bronchitis...as a natural equivalent of viagra...against aid....), so although they are more expensive than chicken once (quite equivalent in nutrient content), in addition of being "a delicacy"...there is demand.

"Culture" I've just discovered that "Wang Ba Dan"..."turtle egg" in Mandarin...is an insult (kind of son of a b..)

It depends on how fast I type what the lenght of the story will be.I wished I had payed more attention in highschool when we where thought Typing blind and with all our fingers.

The photo reminds me of "The Deep South" (being the southern states of the U.S of A ) the coloured man - behind or in front - of the gate.The vicious dog - behind or in front of - the gate.Who's watching who here? The man was part of a team of two who where being busy trimming the trees alongside this fence.Branches where hanging over the road and the road had to be made ready for inspection by the "inspector for industrial buildings".It was a huge line of trees and the guys said they'd cleared all the trees in an hour.I was amazed.Especially because there's no workman wasted on me.

I hate wasps. Im allergic to some types of wasps and hornets so i tend to stay clear, and it was a real nerve thing trying to get close enogh for this photograph - i Confess I held the camera out at arms length and used auto focus :)

Yet i love the way this turned out - the wasp in the center seems to be staring right at me.

Now of course I have to work out a way to kill the bloody things.

The San Clemente Island goat is a type of domestic goat derived from feral goats isolated on San Clemente Island, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. San Clemente Island goats are small, fine-boned, and deer-like. The males sport outwardly-twisting, Spanish-type horns. Though not a breed in the strictest sense, San Clemente Island goats are listed as a critically endangered heritage breed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. In 2009, their global population was about 450. They live on the mainland U.S.A. and in western Canada.

Miller Park Zoo had multiple births of their San Clemente Island goats this year and are helping to increase the population.

The carvings on this bowl represent creatures which were traditionally believed to have been used by witches to make their magic potions: lizards, snails, toads and snakes, all animals which feature in traditional medicine. The bowl is turned to resemble a large drinking cup, similar to a type which was popular in the 17th century and was probably used by a doctor or apothecary rather than a wise woman or 'witch' as she would not have wanted to draw attention to herself for fear of persecution and death.

Hello and Happy New Year Flickr! I think this is the first time in a few years I haven't done a reflection over my past year and that is because I was too damn busy having fun to edit photos or even think about writing anything down. Now I have two jobs I have even less time to do things like that =(

(I got a new job as an assistant media tech/student support type thing at Sussex University just before Christmas. Puuuurrrrrfect!)

Esta raza tipo spitz puede ser originaria de Siberia o Mongolia. Era guardián de los templos y perro de trineo, más tarde se convirtió en el perro de caza preferido de los emperadores chinos.

Los chow chow tienen la lengua negra azulada y patas traseras casi rectas, por lo que parece estar siempre inclinado. Su pelaje se puede encontrar en negro, rojo, gamuza, crema, azul o blanco uniforme, a veces con manchas más claros u oscuros, pero nunca multicolor. Su pelo llegar hacer a veces suave. Tiene orejas pequeñas y redondeadas, y un collarín en la parte posterior de la cabeza, lo que le da aspecto de león.

Esta raza es inteligente, pero difícil de entrenar. Excelente guardián, es orgulloso sospecha de los extraños. Llega a ser territorial, si se le provoca puede ser un luchador sangriento.

This race spitz type can be native to Siberia or Mongolia. It was guardian of the temple and dog sled, later became the favorite hunting dog of the Chinese emperors.

The chow chow are bluish black tongue and hind legs almost straight, it always seems to be tilted. Their fur can be found in black, red, suede, cream, blue or white uniform, sometimes with clear or dark spots, but never multicolored. Her hair sometimes do get soft.Have small and rounded ears and a collar on the back of the head, which gives aspect of lion.

This race is smart, but difficult to train. Excellent guardian, is proud suspicion of outsiders. It becomes territorial, if he causes a fighter can be bloody.

Whenever I scooped him up and dumped him in my palm, he would immediately jump off. If I dumped him on the counter, he did not have the same reaction. I guess the other explanation is that he really liked my kitchen counter.

I like to get shots of spiders in my hand. This one did not like my hand.

Whenever I scooped her up and dumped him in my palm, she would immediately jump off. If I dumped her on the counter, she did not have the same reaction. I guess the other explanation is that he really liked my kitchen counter.

In this shot, the front legs are flexed a bit so it's hard to appreciate just how long they are compared to the other legs.

Super long (and thin) spider

A Slender Crab Spider, a type of Running Crab Spider.
This is one of my first findings of Philodromidae family spiders.
Luckily this spider is quite and inactive, just laying there doing nothing, I managed to measure it.

Size: 8mm (forehead to tail tip), 47mm from back leg's tip to the tip of it's front leg.
